we are looking for a place where we can hear the waves from our room - so I%26#39;d guess you%26#39;d call that beach front. We don%26#39;t want a high rise complex. We are traveling with another couple so twin beds in the 2nd bdrm doesn%26#39;t work. Tho 2 studios or 1 bdrm at the right price would work. Also need a kitchen. Any suggestions?

Check out condos in Kahana. Your idea of high rise may be different from another persons. Noelani is a pretty low rise. You would not want to be in the building next to the road though. We like the Hololani but it is 8 stories high. We hear the ocean throughout the condo. But again, check out all of the condos in that area and also the Napili area. Most of the condos in that area are built withing earshot and eyeshot of the ocean. You should get the blue book, Maui Revealed. If you have their password, you can look online at overhead views of all of the hotels and condos and really see how close you%26#39;ll be. Of course tripadvisor contributors can give you tips on the rooms that have been updated and the ones that you should steer clear of.

no-ocean-here,
Easy(well almost). The Mahana has oceanfron in everyroom. It is a 12-story bldg. It is 50-75%26#39; from the ocean. You will definitely hear the ocean.
The only thing I would verify if you contact them is to make sure the 2bdrm unit does not have twin beds(a lot of them do or at least the ones we looked at). The 2nd bedroom also faces the mountain. All units have kitchens.
I would read the reviews of anyplace you are thinking about staying. We will be at the Mahana in 3 weeks for our 4th trip so we are a little biased.
Lots of beautiful places on Maui!!!
Try Hale Kai or Kulakane...slightly further up the coast from Kaanapali...We%26#39;ve stayed at both places, they are beach front, clean, no more than 3 stories and AFFORDABLE!! We%26#39;re going back to Kulakane in January! Check out both of their websites....Aloha!!
If you are talking about February 2007 you may have to take what you can get. People book the mainland cold months as much as a year in advance.
Still...you could look on vrbo.com for something in Wailea Ekahi. Hale Pau Hana has both high-rise and low-rise buildings. Those are both *on* the beach. We can hear the waves at night at Maui Kamaoe, across Kihei Rd. from Kamaole III Beach Park. Other condos along that stretch should be similar ';wave wise';.
DH and I twice booked lodgings that were on the ocean and twice ended up sleeping in the ';back BR'; because the surf was so loud. Then we decided what we wanted was a close ocean VIEW.
In general there are more low-rise condos in South Maui than in North. Newer, too. I like everything from where the Kamaole Beaches start in Kihei to Makena. N. Kihei is just OK and Maalea is the same.
Thanks to everyone for your replies - the book Maui Revealed was a great help. I think we will end up in South Kihei.
