Am planning to visit Oahu in the April %26#39;07. We plan to spend a few nights in Waikiki, but would like to stay somewhere else on the island for most of the week. What other areas of Oahu would you recommend that are safe, have nice beaches, good swimming, snorkeling and scuba?

North Shore, North Shore, North Shore!!
If you can swing Turtle Bay Resort, that%26#39;s super nice. The resort fans out in a ';Y'; configuration so a majority of the rooms have full ocean views. The beaches in North Shore were my favorite when we were in Oahu 2 weeks ago. Plus you%26#39;re close to all the shrimp trucks, Polynesian Cultural Center and the Dole Plantation as well! We stayed 5 nights in Waikiki - it was enough to last us a lifetime I think. Next time we visit Oahu, we%26#39;re staying in North Shore. Beaches, Shrimp and Fresh Pineapple. Happy!

We are staying at the JW Marriott for the very reason of not wanting to be in Waikiki.
I would also strongley suggest the Turtle Bay and the North Shore. True Hawaii and not a tropical New York city.
For hotel people, North Shore is the place. These are pretty general terms. If we knew your budget type (froogle/endless) or how many you were planning to place in one one room, etc, the choices might be different. It would help to know if you are a hotel person or the can cook a meal on vacation person. Both types are represented here in TA ;^)
You should definately check out VRBO.com. This is going to be our 2nd time staying north shore ish. I think it%26#39;s more on the windward side, it%26#39;s a town called Hauula. It%26#39;s near PCC and Laie. The town runs right along the shore. The rental we had and will have again is a set of 4 plex cottages (studio and 1 bdrm) about 20 feet from the shore. Absolutely beautiful view with a huge lanai to sit and have coffee on in the morning.
Just to throw out another option here too, you may also consider the Kailua area. It is a beautiful part of the island too, and the beaches and swimming there are the best you%26#39;ll find on the island. Although there isn%26#39;t much as far as hotels go, it is certainly worth a thought. You would have to go for a vacation rental like with VRBO or some other site to find a good place to stay.
If you decide to stay in a B%26amp;B or vacation rental in Kailua or any other residential town, be sure to check that your accommodation has a B%26amp;B or TVU (Transient Vacation Unit) non-conforming use certificate. I know from first hand experience, most locals frown on vacationers who stay in unauthorized properties.
Everyone please stay away from Kailua as far as renting. I need the vacancies for next year to choose from.
B%26amp;Bs are ok. It%26#39;s like living in a hotel and having the people next door cook your breakfast.
Having just returned from Turtle Bay on the North Shore - well, that is all I can think of -----
NORTH SHORE IS THE ONLY PLACE ON OAHU TO STAY
Not sure what the ';For hotel people, the north shore is the place'; means but being as there is just one resort on the entire north shore, it is not like it is a hotel area.
I just have to say that the North Shore is the place to be whether you are ';hotel people'; or if you are in a rental. If you desire quiet, peaceful overwhelming beauty and to be a world away from Waikiki, then the north shore is the place hotel or rental.
