I am a roadie and want to rent a bike and ride everyday whil I am in Kauai....any tips form local road cyclists. I understand the roads are narrow with not much shoulder. I am staying near Waimea (Waimea Plantation Cottages)...any suggestions anyone has would be a great help.

Biking on kauai.....
Wow !! It is possible, but could be dangerous for you, and the vehilces. problem is NOT many bike trails, and many times no shoulder on the roads.
You would be out in the traffic lanes, which could cause not only serious back ups in traffic, danger to yourself, but cars and trucks trying to get around you on the narrow roadways having a head on with other traffic.
Suggestion: Check out the areas that you want to bike by car first, and assess the situation.
Also, put a rack on the rear, and drive up to one of the many dirt tracks up in kokee, ride to the trail heads on the dirt roads.
You could also ride the cane haul road out to Polihale Beach.
Just had a family of three killed right near your lodgings. They made a u-turn in their car on the main highway. Unforturnately it was in front of a propane truck. Highway on Kauai, is not like your mainland highway....it is a two lane road, one lane each direction.
Once you scope out the roads, you might find areas that are safe for you and others. But, do be aware, that many areas, like biking UP waimea canyon would be flat dangerous.
We ride bikes here, and limit the areas. There is a plan for a bike trail along the east and north east shore in the works, but who knows when that will actually be completed.

We were in Waimea in May and I think there is a little place that rents bikes in town, next to the pharmacy. I agree with Denny that riding on the highway is not a good idea, and riding the road to Polihale would be big fun. You could probably ride around the side streets and through town also. Some of the little towns between Waimea and Poipu are really cool also, with lots of side streets. If you are looking for authentic Hawaii, you will love Waimea. We still laugh over trying to understand what the kids were saying. There is a place called the Bottle shop near the Big Save that has good Hawaiian plate lunches for cheap; forgot to tell you that. Can%26#39;t wait for the trip report!!!! And thanks to Denny for info on the brewery, will definately go when we are there in March. We stay in a condo in town, but I did notice how beautiful the grounds are at WPC.
I doubt you can rent a proper road bike in Kauai. You might want to ship your bike from home.
Waimea Canyon. 4000 ft elevation gain over 15 miles. The road is in good repair up to the last few miles. Despite the lack of shoulders alluded to in other posts, the road is not very busy, and the cars that are there are mostly slow moving tourist vehicles looking for view spots.
If you%26#39;re willing to go off the paved roads, you might try renting a bike in between Koloa and Poipu, by the dive shop, or at the tennis pro shop at the Hyatt, and heading out behind the Hyatt past the golf course. The paved road becomes dirt, and then dissolves into fields and trails. Eventually you get to some spectacular, and empty beaches.
Funny that you should mention this.....just back from our second trip to Kauai. After observing a few people riding bikes along narrow roads and dealing with traffic that doesn%26#39;t seem very bike-friendly, we agreed that we wouldn%26#39;t enjoy cycling on Kauai. There are some good roads to ride on, I%26#39;m sure, but there%26#39;s so much else to be doing on Kauai that%26#39;s better suited to the island. If we wanted riding our bikes to be a big part of the vacation, we wouldn%26#39;t spend it on Kauai.
Hi, I%26#39;m a roadie also but it doesn%26#39;t sound like the roads on Kauai are the greatest place to ride. What are the Mtn. bike options. Staying on the north shore near Hanalei. Not really into the organized tours. Would like to rent a bike and find some trails to ride.
wow...thanks for all of the info and advice. Outfitters Kauai does rent road bikes...a little expensive. Sounds like Mt biking is the best option though....cycling is just such a big part of my routine that it is hard to think about a day without my bike. I know....sounds crazy to some of you I am sure...and dangerous roads, well it goes with the sport. But you all have me thinking...maybe its time for a vaction from the bike too..
My husband rides every time we go to Kauai..He has found many places to ride...Mostly residental in Kaapa..You can ride the main road or ';highway'; if thats what you want to call it.(mostly two lane, 4 in Wailua to Lihue). There is a large burm on the side..People get freaked out in a car when thay see you on a main
';highway';. GREATEST EXCERSICE THERE IS%26gt;%26gt;and on a bike in Kauai can not be more beautiful!!
