Need Help for Mauna Kea Trip

I%26#39;ve never been up to Mauna Kea. I%26#39;ve heard that the car rental companies won%26#39;t let you take rentals on a route up there. I%26#39;m usually not one for taking tours, but I don%26#39;t want to miss this. Would you recommend a tour line, or a route to drive that would be ok with the car rental people? I%26#39;ll be staying at the Hilton in Waikoloa. Also, I%26#39;ll be on my own, so a long night drive may not be the best idea. Also, I%26#39;ve heard that they sometimes furnish parkas, which would save me from lugging cold weather gear to Hawaii for this one event. Please let me know what you think?
