Well we just got back Sat. afternoon from Maui. It was so sad to leave. We loved it. It was so georgeous. The scenery was amazing.
Top 5 Activities to do:
1. The road to Hana
Drive it yourself. Take your time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Its unlike anything you have ever seen. The roads are really curvy and one lane some of the way but its well worth it. I am terribly afraid of heights and had a few problems on that road but all in all I loved the scenery.I can%26#39;t even explain how beautiful the road to Hana was. Past Hana there is a waterfall called Alelele. It was the best waterfall we found. Had to hike back to it but worth it. Blue Pool was a no go for us. We got there, paid for parking and walked down there and this angry hawaiian guy wouldn%26#39;t let us go past his house. He had the road blocked and wouldn%26#39;t let us pass. The guy that we met walking there was a local and he kinda pushed him out of the way. So we had to turn around. Think he might have been drunk. That was a disappointment.
2. Circle Island Helicopter ride through Mauiscape
This was well worth the money. It lasted 60 mins. (which it would have lasted longer thou). The coastline and Haelakala were awesome from the sky. The waterfalls were beautiful. There are so many waterfalls you can%26#39;t see from the road. Looking from the sky up top of the mountain looking down they are rows of waterfalls. Its amazing.
(We found a good deal through Expediafun....for $190 pp including tax)
3. Blue Water Ocean Rafting around the Kaniao Coast.
We got to see tons of sea caves and lava arches. Plus the ride was fun. I had never been rafting before. We stopped to snorkel twice. The first time we stopped they hardly ever get to snorkel there because of the rough waters. They said only 20 days out of the year they can stop there. Also we swam with turtles. It was so cool...one got so close I couldn%26#39;t even fit it in my camera lens to take a pic.
4. Sunrise on Haelakala
It was so amazing to watch the sun rise. Warning thou....ITS FREEZING up there (litterally). Take Jeans and sweatshirt and take your hotel blanket with you if you plan on going. Don%26#39;t make the mistake of going with flipflops and capris...I froze. Also there are tons of hikes you can do. We didn%26#39;t know b/c the vistors center was closed on the summit. We got down to the first visitor center before we realized there were hikes. We were so hungry and cold that we didn%26#39;t drive back up. Wish we could have done some of them.
5. Banyan Tree on Front Street
Its this huge tree someone planted 200 years ago and it covers an acre of land. Its really cool.
Wasn%26#39;t impressed to much with our luau...Royal Lahina Luau. It wasn%26#39;t horrible but on the Big Island I saw better.
Got back Sat. - Trip Report
Sounds like you had a great time! I don%26#39;t go until November. :(
Where were your favorite places to eat?
Got back Sat. - Trip Report
We actually ate at Hard Rock Cafe on front st. twice. It was good. coast about 45$ for two people.
We also ate at Honokawai Deli. One of the chefs that worked at mamas fish market and quite and opened his own place. Its great. ITs in the Maui revealed book. It cost us 20$ for two people. I ate teryaki steak with stir fry veg. and rice and my husband ate kung pao chicken with vegs. and rice.
We also ate at Buzz Warf close to the Ocean Center. My husband got Macadamian Nut Mahi Mahi and it was excellant. It was about $30 a plate for that.
We went to the store for breakfast stuff for the week and mostly lunch food also. So we ate pretty cheap.
IF you go on the road to hana, buy some lunch meat and a cheap cooler. There are no food places on the trip there.
Thanks for the good tips!
Thanks for your trip report! Swimming with turtles sounds like an unbelievable experience. Lucky!! I wish I could have seen some. Next time. :) I loved the Road to Hana as well and the Honokawai Okazuya Deli!!
Thanks for the trip report. Glad to hear that you had such a good time. After reading your report about Blue Water Ocean Rafting I had to check it out. I see that they offer a Kanaio/Molokini tour and another one that exclusively tours the Kanaio Coast. Can I ask which one you took? Kanaio looks SO beautiful. Do you know the name of the place that you were able to snorkel that isn%26#39;t always accessible? Did you get to snorkle at La Perouse Bay? Also, do you think you have to be very experienced to do this snorkel tour? I%26#39;ve snorkeled in Mexico and the Caribbean a few times, but I wouldn%26#39;t consider myself extremely ';experienced'; either. Sorry for all of the questions. I%26#39;m so excited about this snorkel tour. I%26#39;ve been checking out lots of tours that are offered and hadn%26#39;t found one that I was absolutely sold on until now.
Hi Mk,
Was the rafting trip bumpy? fast? scary? never been, and it seems like fun.
Santy
We went on Kaniao Coast tour. It was amazing. Blue Water rafting was so fun. I recommend it.
Blue water rafting was very fun, its not bumpy in the back. Its not scary. I can%26#39;t swim hardly at all and it wasn%26#39;t scary.
someone asked about food- if you are near kihia. There is a place called maui tacos. It was really good they have pinapple salsa and they have all these celebrity pictures on the wall. It is cheap and kinda fast food. We ate there twice when we were there for a week. Good cheap local food
Looks like you had a great time. Thanks for the report. We took Blue Water on our first trip. It was very bumpy but fun. You definetly see some of the island you don%26#39;t on other trips. One place we went was a place called La Perouse Pinnacle and it was awesome and spooky all at once. Out there in open water with a small pinnacle in the middle of nowhere coming out of the abyss. Thats where I learned that bouyency only lasts for a relativly short distance. I free dove down to get some fish photos. Normally you float back up. Here I went down far enough that I didn%26#39;t. And with nothing but those blue spires shimmering down to who knows where under you. All the time the brain is saying ';Don%26#39;t panic, don%26#39;t panic.'; One of the reasons we bought our own gear for following trips, fins with some umf! (is that a word? lol)
We haven%26#39;t done the helcopter trip yet. Wife isn%26#39;t big on flying but getting better. Maybe the next trip. Thanks again for the report.
