Need help deciding-Activities

OK, here%26#39;s what I have been thinking

We will be in Kauai Dec 16-30, staying at Kuhio Shores, Poipu.

The three planned activities that we want are a Luau, Tubing and a Snorkel Cruise. I have not booked anything yet, but these are my ideas. FYI-I am waiting on the 2007 Entertainment book.

Luau-Smith%26#39;s on December 25th(Christmas) if they are open. Would you recommend this Luau? I would like for both of us to be able to enjoy the cocktails, so is there any transportation to and from?

Tubing-Kauai Backcountry Adventures-10:30 departure, would like to leave this until the last week in case it kills my back.

Snorkel Cruise-HoloHolo Charters??? I don%26#39;t know about this yet. Any ideas. There are not any that leave the north shore in December, right? One of my life long dreams is to see a dolphin.

Any help is appreciated.

We went with HoloHolo last year and loves the trip. It is a must do. If money is not an issue you may want to consider adding a helicopter tour. definitely get to the canyon.

Smith%26#39;s is open on Christmas. We would have to cab it. Does anybody have any guesses on the cost, not that it matters, really. Just curious:)

Thanks,

Rebecca

I%26#39;m jealous that you%26#39;ll be in Hawaii for Christmas.

I am not sure if Smith%26#39;s Luau will be open on Christmas day, but you can%26#39;t go wrong with the Luau. As many times as we travel to the islands, we make sure we make it to this luau. Can%26#39;t say much about the tubing, but if you do a search on the Kauai forum there are review from other travelers. I%26#39;ve don HoloHolo Charters, great fun but I%26#39;ve done it in the summer so I don%26#39;t know how it is during the winter. If you want to save some money, I booked a value combo that included the snorkel cruise %26amp; luau through www.hawaiiactive.com %26amp; I was able to save some money.

Have a great trip!

Aloha Rebecca! Yes to Smith%26#39;s - we were just there (again) and had a fabulous time. Here is their website - presently, it%26#39;s just Mon, Wed, Fri. for luau%26#39;s . . . .you could email them and find out about Christmas. http://www.smithskauai.com/luau.html

Is it Fall in your neck of the woods yet? Just wondering . . . seeing more yellow leaves everyday here. I miss Kauai! You are going to have so much fun! :)

It should be fall, but the weather is ';misbehaving'; this year. We are suffering a major drought right now. The temps are much higher that usual, so our leaves are turning/falling, but that%26#39;s because of the lack of water!

Thanks for the advice!

Rebecca

So, I think we will go to Smith%26#39;s for Christmas. Just have to find cab fare.

As for HoloHolo, we don%26#39;t see the need to snorkel, so I am think that the Na Pali Sunset and Sightsee tour will work great. It%26#39;s 3.5 hrs.

Tubing-just have to discuss the date with dh, he wants to go sooner than later, but I don%26#39;t. We%26#39;ll have to figure that out!

Thanks for all of the advice!

Mzm,

Other posters have helped you out with Smiths...totally agree.

The TUBING is very tame......you just lay in a comfortable tube, and slowly meander ( float ) down an old irrigation ditch. No effort is expended.....there are not air stems on the tubes, just big round tubes. EASY STUFF.

You will be able to stand up and walk if you wish, as that is what the guides do as they escort your group.

there are some long tunnels, and you have a helmet with a light on it, which you turn on when entering the tunnels.

After tubing, you meet at a swimming hole and picnic area, and just enjoy, visit, possibly swim, and for sure ..eat !!. Then Van ride back down to the Back Country Offices to your car.

On Holo-Holo, I would think that time of year you might see dolphins, and possibly some of the early whales......not sure.

We have done 8 Napali Coast Boat tours during the summer, and have seen dolphins each and every time.....I know in the winter, the tour companies are out whale watching. Usually dolphins and whales kind of show up together ( at least in the catalina channel in socal ).

Have fun........

mzmmom, the gardener and security person at Kuhio Shores is Stan. His replacement on weekends is named Robert. He also has his own taxi. He usually starts on Friday afternoons at Kuhio Shores, so if you see him ask him about transportation. I%26#39;m sure he will be able to help you.

Sometimes there are spinner dolphins passing in front of Kuhio Shores, and although December is a bit early for the Humpbacks, you might see a few early bird...er should I say, early whales out front.

Hope that helps.

Mzm,

We have reservations on Christmas at Smith%26#39;s already - I was sure to specifically ask if they were doing one on a holiday. He said others had booked also, so it%26#39;s a go! You might want to go ahead and book it.

We are a family of six with Grandma coming, and staying in Poipu also, so we%26#39;ll see you there!

For the snorkel tour, I recommend Na Pali Explorer out of Waimea.
