N Shore Only place outside Waikiki to stay?

Hi

I have never been to Oahu (last island to visit) and will be there in early December. We are two families with young children and would like to rent a house. We want to be away from Waikiki. Looking at other recent posts, it seems like the North Shore may be our best bet, but I was wondering if the North it might be rainey or have turbulent seas that time of year.

We would like to feel safe and probably in a somewhat touristy area, as opposed to a locals-type neighborhood. We would also like to venture to the beach with yound children without too much of a drive.

Thanks for you help!

Given your preferences I%26#39;d probably stay away from Makaha area on the leeward side. You might want to browse for rentals in Kailua or Lanikai on the windward (east) side. The area is absolutely beautiful, it%26#39;s a little touristy but very low-key, and the water is calm. On the north shore in December you might not be able to get in the water, depending on the weather. Especially with little kids. Kailua beach is keiki heaven (ideal for kids).

Here%26#39;s one for-instance:

And woohooo! It lists a TVU number, which means it%26#39;s licensed as a legal vacation rental.

Thank you! ;-D

Thanks Rivera

North Shore is good. But it probably will be too rough for young kids.

Windward side is good. Especially Kailua/Lanikai area. But the entire area from Kaneohe to Kahuku has lots of beach houses. Windward side will be fairly calm in the winter.

I would stay away from Makaha area. Lots of crime now in this part of the Leeward side. Lots of homeless, drugs, etc. The Leeward side can also be rough in the winter.

Check this site for lodging around the island. As others have said, try to make sure it is a legal rental.

How do you find the TVU number? I don%26#39;t remember seeing one for my rental...

If they don%26#39;t include it in their ad, odds are they don%26#39;t have one. VRBO doesn%26#39;t check for legality of rentals---they just take the money and run.

Go to the ';Kailua'; forum and check out the threads there. Plenty of info about the subject. No need to get my panties in a bunch yet again.
