I will be on the BI the 19th-27th. We have friends arriving on the 21st at 3 pm. Will I be able to get to the airport to pick them up? We are staying south of Kona in the Keahou area?
Road closures due to Ironman
You should be OK but avoid Alii Drive. Go up to the Queen K highway on Kam III Road in Keauhou. The highway will be open, but drive carefully since the race still will be on.
Road closures due to Ironman
Same questions except that I will be arriving on the 20th around 8:00 p.m. and staying at the Hilton Waikaloa. Any roads I should avoid? Thanks!
Simple, coming out of the airport make a left to Waikoloa, park your car, check-in and stay in the hotel all day on the 21st. If you don%26#39;t want to, make sure you don%26#39;t attempt to come to Kona. You can go up to the upper highway through Waikoloa Village and go to Waimea, Honokaa, Waipio, etc.
Thanks for your input. I planned this trip over a year ago, and found out recently about the Ironman. To be honest I%26#39;m a little worry about all the people, traffic etc. Is there anything else that I should be aware of?
Thanks TT. That%26#39;s my plan and I%26#39;m stickin%26#39; to it! We were also thinking of walking to A-Bay that day. Would that be wise?
I%26#39;ve book a snorkel cruise on Tuesday, October 24th with check-in time at 9:30 in Keauhau Bay. Do you think we%26#39;ll have any trouble with crowds/traffic that morning?
Thanks!
It probably will not be as bad a week after as the week before but it%26#39;s still a zoo both weeks. It%26#39;s so bad that I have been going to the Hilo side during the Ironman for years now. Unfortunately, many others from Kona do the same, so the Ironman ';effect'; is felt on the East side too. In any case, take the highway all the way to the Kamehameha III Road and approach Keauhou from there. You should be OK.
Hey TT
We decided to do as the locals do and head to Hilo that weekend of the 21st %26amp; 22nd.
I%26#39;m curious how different our experience of Hilo town will be because of increased numbers.
Either way, crowds or not, I%26#39;m sooo looking forward to this trip!
We will also be at the BI from the 17th through the 24th. My husband will be there for business and the only day he ends early (at 1pm) is on the 21st ...so we were planning on leaving the Hilton Wiakiloa at around 1:00pm and we have a 4:30pm reservation on a Helicopter tour at 4:30 out of Hilo.
Do you think it will be impossible to do?
Thanks,
