First and maybe only trip to BI Game Plan & tonsof questions

Aloha All! Where to start...We are taking a forced (gasp) trip to Kona for a family wedding. The wedding should be beautiful and wonderful. That being said, we are on a budget and have limited time (6 days/6 nights minus family duties. This is our first and probably only trip to HI. I really don%26#39;t want to offend anyone. I know HI will be gorgeous and we will see and experience things we never have before. It%26#39;s just we find we get way more for our vacation buck in Mexico. We aren%26#39;t cheap, it%26#39;s just that is the only way we can afford to have one nice vacation a year. So, we%26#39;re all still friends? Great!

I%26#39;ve booked the airfare, we are getting the Government employee rate of $150 at Hilton Waikoloa, Got what I think is an awesome deal for a rental car, $125 a week + tax for a compact at Dollar right at KOA%26#39;s terminal. So far so good.

I%26#39;m bringing my own snorkel gear so I don%26#39;t have to rent at the Hilton, my own coffee because a previous poster said they charge $3.50 a day. (that%26#39;s crazy talk!) and my giant pool towel because I read somewher the pool towel return closes much earlier than than pool is actually open. Makes no sense to me either.

We are also bringing non perishable food for the room, like candy, nuts, chips and instant oatmeal (Travel tip: run hot water thru the in-room coffee maker for instant oatmeal or instant soup)

We are both bringing a half gallon of our favorite hard liquor (gonna check with airline on that first) and pre-mix a huge cocktail in an insulated mug for pool days. Don%26#39;t worry, people will think it;s a water bottle. We go out of our way to avoid PDT%26#39;s - Public Displays of Tackyness. When we are actually sitting at the bar we will order drinks from the bartender, pretending we are like those fortunate people who don%26#39;t have children in college, quickly devouring any dream of retirement their parents may have had.

Okay, on with the questions:

We want to stop at a real grocery store straight out of the airport, before hotel check in. By real I mean something the locals use, not a convenience store with inflated prices. We want lunchmeat, cheese bread milk fruit and most important, cocktail mixers. We will probably have to make a second trip during our stay. I will have a small empty suitcase ready to put the stuff in, to avoid looking like the Clampetts as we check in at the hotel. Can someone get an address for me so I can have Mapquest in hand as we drive out of the airport? Did I mention I%26#39;m very Anal?

Also I see the hilton charges for a fridge in room. Are there mini bars in all the rooms? Would it be possible to remove those items and use that as a fridge? I have done this before, even at another Hilton. If not, maybe at the last minute I can call down and ask for a fridge to be brought up?

Also, would it A) be tacky

B) be frowned upon by the hotel

to bring our own pool noodles? We just love those things.

And, will the Hilton concierge activities be overpriced, should I research and pre-book from home to save $$?

You guys aren%26#39;t getting off this easy...I will post many more questions as time goes by. Thanks so much and aloha

Maggie

First and maybe only trip to BI Game Plan %26amp; tonsof questions

IMHO you can spend just gas money on the Big Island and still have one heck of an adventure. If you haven%26#39;t planned to, I%26#39;d suggest putting a day or two aside to explore, perhaps go see the volcano or just drive part of the Hamakua (north) coast - see Waipio Valley, etc.

I can%26#39;t even imagine going to the BI and not visiting a few of it%26#39;s natural wonders.

First and maybe only trip to BI Game Plan %26amp; tonsof questions

Very entertaining ... lol

you didn%26#39;t say if you%26#39;re a Costco member. Costco is the closest store locals use to airport. You didn%26#39;t say how many people you are feeding. If only two, Costco might be overkill in portions.

On the way from airport, there is nothing straight out of it as it%26#39;s in the middle of lava fields and not in a town. You either have to go to shop in Kailua-Kona which means you have to drive south and go through traffic to shop (other than the Costco). Or you can check in first, then go up to Waikoloa Village Market or for better prices Foodland in Waimea. Waimea is small and easy to find the store, same with Waikoloa. Going both places will give you a fabulous view of the Big Island coastline as you return down the hill, going to Kailua will give you squat in the way of scenery. Your choice, you have plenty of options here.

I doubt you need to bring your own liquor but that%26#39;s up to you.

There%26#39;s a discount liquor store tucked away above Kawaihae Harbor and Kamuela Liquors in Waimea plus Foodland in Waimea. As HawaiiDan will tell you, Long%26#39;s Drugs specializes in good prices on hard liquor and sells mixers. It%26#39;s in Kailua-Kona. You%26#39;ll want to visit Kona at some point so you can buy your refills there.

Do you really need to bring your own liquor from home? Well, you%26#39;ll have to check it and risk breakage. I can%26#39;t imagine you%26#39;ll save that much money. You will absolutely save over the bar prices at the Hilton. But as you wish. I don%26#39;t think liquor is so very expensive here. Goods that have to be shipped in refrigerated containers cost more to ship, but liquor isn%26#39;t in that category.

Sorry I don%26#39;t know about the frig%26#39;s. I always take out the honor bar stuff but those frig%26#39;s are never that functional, are they. I recommend a soft-sided collapsible cooler you can bring from home and use hotel ice to chill your beverages. Keep stuff that doesn%26#39;t do well in melting ice in your honor bar frig ...

Mapquest allows you to put in the name of a business. Also you can search and bring up the online yellow pages for the Big Island and get all your addresses, sorry I don%26#39;t have time to post the street addresses. Have you tried the interactive google maps? I like them better because you can put in the Hilton as your base and then zoom out and travel in any direction.

Person on tight budget vs Hilton seems a bit funny.

Kona has Safeway and a couple of other good grocery stores, but nothing north of airport. even my wife a costco fan chooses to not buy food there on Kona. we spend a week and do not need bulk.

Waikoloa Village 7 miles up the hill from Hilton probably has a grocery.

But lack of easy grocery stores is one reason we will not book into Kohala Coast. It is more for the eat out people to me. we tend to buy a weeks supply of food and cook in condo.

You may want to go into kona from airport

phirl, actually there is plenty of regular shopping in Waimea and the store in Waikoloa serves a large residential community. There are lots and lots of working class people living in North and South Kohala who don%26#39;t go to Kona to buy groceries. You must not have explored the options up the hill. Along the coast there is nothing for budget-minded people, that%26#39;s true, with the exception of the Discount Liquor store I mentioned.

I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s weird to be at the Hilton on a budget. If you get a break on room prices, why not? A lot of people who stay at the Hilton aren%26#39;t paying high prices, whether using points or their company is paying for it, whatever.

Combine cheap room with a strategy to keep food costs down and it%26#39;s very doable. There are some regular-priced restaurants around as well, just not in the hotels.

Waimea a bit of a drive from Hilton.

I lived part of my life in E Oregon, Waimea looked like home. many pickups and cowboy hats, etc. working people.

Still suggest op go into Kona if she wants real grocery.before Hilton.

Aloha! thanks to everyone who replied. Pelekai, we definately want to see some sights, which is why we got the car. I%26#39;ll have to do a snorkel, just not sure which trip[/company yet. First I%26#39;m trying to firm up the basics, lodging, transportation etc. My DH won%26#39;t go, so I might have to wait till we are there to see who I can get to go with me. I%26#39;ll go alone if I must, Not snorkeling in HI is simply not an option!!! I love it too much. Plus I have been searching alot for some kind of plantation tour - coffee, pinapple? online and haven%26#39;t found anything yet. I thought that would be really fun. I%26#39;m also thinking a drive trip to VNP is in order. And We will definately do a scenic drive, including some waterfalls, black beach, etc. I just haven;t gotten that far in the planning yet.

maybe even an ATV tour. I%26#39;m interested in HawaiianDans take on those. I%26#39;m all about protecting the environment and don%26#39;t want to do an ATV if it has been a destructive thing to BI.

I Think we will definately just spring for the fridge. DH has to eat often and have a good snack everynight (he%26#39;s high maintenance, :)

Village Market in Waikoloa sounds great, I;ll map quest it. We%26#39;ll do it before check in because the flight doesn%26#39;t arrive till 3 pm and once we arrive and check in we%26#39;ll want to relax and tour the grounds without having to run more errands. It%26#39;ll be a LONG travel day for us. It is only DH and myself eating, but he is a grazer.

Phirl, you really hit the nail on the head when you said for someone on a budget the Hilton is a funny choice! You have to remember this is a forced vacation for a wedding -- we had no choice with dates or hotel choice. And this is where the stress is coming from. Had we chose this we would have 1) picked a seaside condo with a full kitchen in a more accessible area 2) stayed at least 10 days to enjoy the area and take in more sights.

We already stretched it out to 6 days, (actually 8 with travel) the most we can because its late in the year and I%26#39;m running out of vacation days.

And finally, never underestimate the value of Alcohol when on a forced trip where everyone Must have a great time with each other, exes included!

I%26#39;ll post more questions on sightseeing as I figure those out, Thanks and Aloha!

Maggie

Maggie,

if you will get in late and tired than I personally don%26#39;t recommend Kona as your first stop as you%26#39;ll hit slow traffic going in from the airport. Stop and go slow, anywhere south of Costco. Especially when a big plane arrives, that will add to normal bad traffic of people who get off shift in Kohala hotels in afternoon.

traffic will be really bad going into Waimea at that time too.

If you want the least stress just head on up to the Waikoloa Village Market, which is in Waikoloa Highlands Shopping Center.

Left out of Hilton, right at first and only traffic light up to Waikoloa village, 6-8 miles to the store. Prices are pretty comparable on the island in the major grocery stores. If you go to Foodland or Sack n Save, sign up for the Mai Kai card, free. most good prices are Mai Kai specials. For Safeway, use or if you don%26#39;t have one sign up for Safeway Club Card, again that is where the prices become affordable. The WVM is a KTA store.

Plan a second shopping trip for your next outing depending on where you drive, Waimea or Kona. Make that the stock up trip but really the prices aren%26#39;t that different.

phirl, yep, Waimea is at the center of the largest working cattle ranch in the US and it%26#39;s whole image is about cowboys, but that%26#39;s only half the story. There%26#39;s a lot of money in that town and the dry side is super desirable for residential and expensive. Wet side is where the working class live (towards Hamakua coast).

Waimea is the hub town for a wide area of the Big Island and the Foodland there is newer and stocked with everything from basics to gourmet. I think it might be the nicest grocery store on the island -- as chain supermarkets go here.

Maggie, I don%26#39;t know when you arrive but on Saturday morning there%26#39;s a country farmer%26#39;s market in Hawi where you can find fresh island produce cheap and and ready to eat.

woops missed timing agree do NOT go into Kona after 3PM arrival. Pick up something at Hilton for that evening and go to Waikoloa or Waimea next day for real grocery store next morn. . That late afternoon traffic in Kona is miserable we spent maybe 45 mins getting out of Safeway parking lot to southbound on HI-11one afternoon

your lucky as government rates are suppose to be when on official business only. Mini bars are not adjusted for perishables, you are better off with a cooler. We bring collapsable as they charge $15/day for mini fridge but if left in room when you get there more than likely no charge. Ice is free but soft. bring ziplocs for ice or sandwiches or keeping cut fruit together. You will get hit for most everything here including parking your own auto now $7/day but relax and enjoy. Best places for souvieners is Kmart, local small chain store abc drug? in Kona, then maybe wallmart. Costco deli is good, if going to other grocery stores chain ones ask about savers card. Bananas are more exp but flavor is much much greater. Maybe even pick cooler up at store. If you go to hilohatties you will get free puka shell necklace, good for little ones. We like to drive alot so we always have snacks and sandwiches and coolers. Son only eats oatmeal for breakfast. If you go to hilo hit the cookie factory and esp waterfalls.

  • The condo we booked has no A/C and I'm sweating it out!

We%26#39;ve booked a condo at Kanaloa at Kona for the first 10 days in November with the understanding that it had A/C available. That is a must for us in that particular location as it is REALLY hot there. Now we%26#39;re being told that no A/C is available for the unit we booked. Fortunately, we can cancel our reservation within 72 hours of arrival and get our deposit refunded. Before I do that, I%26#39;d like to book another accomodation (wish me luck on such short notice). Condo or B%26amp;B, doesn%26#39;t matter as long as it%26#39;s spacious and comfortable with kitchen facilities as we like to eat in. Don%26#39;t care if it%26#39;s oceanfront, in fact would prefer something in a higher elevation where it stays cooler, especially at night. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

The condo we booked has no A/C and I'm sweating it out!

Try A Hale Lani. Private rental with views that rival Holualoa Inn for a fraction of the price. Also has full kitchen and outdoor dining. It will be cool in November (in the 70s during the day, 60%26#39;s at night). It%26#39;s at the perfect elevation, very close to Holualoa village, and just minutes to town.

The condo we booked has no A/C and I'm sweating it out!

Call Rob Smith at 808.329.9300 and tell him ';TypicallyTropical'; referred you. He owns one of the most well established property management companies in Kona and has control over hundreds of condos.

    Navatek vs. Star of Honolulu

Trying to make a decision between these two dinner cruises. Can anyone tell me the pros %26amp; cons of each? Do they have a top deck to walk around on? Thanks!

    Navatek vs. Star of Honolulu

I can compare the Navatek dinner cruise and the Star of Honolulu whale watching cruise...

Navatek is a much smaller boat, newer and very smooth. However didn%26#39;t get a good sunset view because I was sitting on the wrong side of the boat and the boat didn%26#39;t turn to let everyone get a good view. The buffet dinner was very average.

I went on the Star of Honolulu whale watching cruise last year, and the food was much better and entertainment was as well, although the ship is older. Its kind of a toss up depending on the atmosphere you want, but if you want better food go with the star of honolulu. Navatek has less people and cozier atmostphere.

    Navatek vs. Star of Honolulu

We also went on the Navatek and did the buffet as we waited to long to book the cruise if we did it again would probably upgrade the menu. As far as the sunset the Navatek is one of a few that goes past Diamond Head for a little different view you can also go out the deck and get photos of the coast as well as the sunset.

If anyone is your group is prone to seasickness, Navatek is the smoothest ride in the islands; BY FAR.

just got back 3 wonderful weeks in hawaii.

did the navatek do the royal ali its well worth it.

sunset was not brilliant there was cloud the night we did it

    but it was still awesome.

    Aloha

Although I can%26#39;t compare the two, I did do the star of honolulu dinner cruise in Sept 05. I loved it!! The food was amazing - the best lobster and blue hawaii%26#39;s i have ever tasted!!!

Excellent service and the staff were all really lovely. There is entertainment provided during the duration of night. They have two hawaiian men playing background music while you are enjoying your meal. Once dinner is finished, some island/hawaiian dancers perform. I had a really great time!

There is a large observation deck on the top of the boat, which you can use anytime during the trip. I went up and got some nice photos of the sunset and waikiki beach. But there is also side decks too, which you can use to watch the sunset if you want. (but i would recommend the top observation deck)

I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. Hope this helps!

don%26#39;t know if this matters or not - but the star of honolulu is a set 5 course menu. They don%26#39;t offer a buffet, so you don%26#39;t have to worry about waiting in long lines. You get two cocktails included in the price of dinner. - DELICIOUS FOOD!! AWESOME COCKTAILS!!

We%26#39;ve been on both of these ships along with the Ali%26#39;i Kai and had a wonderful time on all three. It just depends how much $ you want to spend. The Star so Honolulu is a much bigger ship with different levels of dining. The others have buffet style dining. They all have good intertainment and feel free to wonder around the ship for photo ops.

If you go to the ';search'; function on this page, type in ';navatek'; hit ';go';, read that stuff then type in ';Star of Honolulu'; and ';go';, you will get a BUNCH of info for your edification. Chuck

    Hale Koa Hotel

Just reserved an ocean view room for 5 night stay. After reading several reviews looks like Maile tower is the nicest. Any recommendations or comments welcomed as this is our first trip to HI.

    Thanks.

    Hale Koa Hotel

You will be staying in the hotel that yearly gets voted the best bargain in Hawaii because of the cheap rates for military.

    Lots to do on Oahu:

    Hale Koa Hotel

We love the Hale Koa. We have stayed there many times in the Maile Tower. If you are planning on doing any tours/activities, I would suggest you buy them at Hickam AFB rather than the hotel itself. While the travel agency at the Hale Koa give discounts on activities, we still found that the best deals were at the base (ex. Atlantis Sub). Also, the Navy Exchange is a great place to buy souveniers. Having said that, the best place for souveniers is the flea market at Aloha Stadium. I believe it is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Enjoy!

Love the Hale Koa, we will be staying there for first time in OCT, so I cant comment on rooms/tower but I have been there just for the day several times and its nice, the Koko Cafe has GREAT food too, and the prices are the best I think you can get in Waikiki.

Here is the webpage for Hickam ITT-Great prices, very convient to just walk in and purchase tickets, Im assuming you have Mil ID-so directions for this part of Hickam is drive towards Airport, then on Nimittz, right after airport take a left On Elliot, keep following road and it will enter base (just need rental car paperwork and ID) keep going straight on base and The ITT is on right, just past the first street crossing, has a orange ( I think) surfboard on face of building

    www.hickamservices.com/itt-price-list.asp

    also

www.Bellowsafs.com is terrific! Mil resort on windward side In Waimanolo area, do you have a rental car? The drive alone from Waikiki to Bellows is just amazing in itself!

Stayed there in June. It was great! Everyone was very nice.

Great beach area and the pools are well kept.

The snack bar and exchange were very handy.

If you want a more relaxed environment, definitely head to

Bellows AFS. It is so peaceful and beautiful there.

    Have a great trip!

knb, are you referring to the base exchange at Hickam AFB?

No, refer to DallasCat information. The ITT at Hickam will provide you with the best rates for tours rather than the travel agency at Hale Koa.

KNB, I think that the poster, tweenie the Origional OP, hasent posted reply yet. Im just guessing the secondary question was about the Navy Exchange, which should not in my opinion be confused with the Hickam Bx, anyone stop me if Im wrong here lol! The NEX (Pearl Harbor Exchange/Comm/mall) is the hugest thing Ive ever seen! Its awesome! Our little Bx and BX extra at Hickam fails to compare, I must add Hickam has a great exchange but the Pearl Harbor Mall is just on a different level! That being said-its always crowded, but besides aloha swap meet and if u have Mil ID, best next thing! The food court at Pearl Exchange is also available for non Mil ID holders, my favorite is I Love country cafe, Ive read about them closing in certain areas, and I just love the salads, enough in that box to eat for days!

    Sorry for hijack-carry on :)

Im sooo blonde! Now that Ive actually READ the comments lol-the place to get tickets on Hickam is NOT in the bx of hickam, but on the ITT site, which is basicaly a travel agency for military that also provides discounted activity rates, you could go to Hickam BX and they will give you directions, but I gave driving directions with pricing list above. I live on Hickam-and if I can help anyone here is my addy

    prahy001@hawaii.rr.com

    sorry for confusions!

Quick question about the Hale Koa, do they sell liquor (like by the bottle) or do you need to go to the nearest ABC store?

    Dallas Cat 70 and KNB

I didn%26#39;t word my question very well, LOL I was actually wanting to know about which exchange for souveniers. Thanks for helping get through that.....

    airfare in December?

    Hey all,

I was just in Kauai in March, and I%26#39;m already ';homesick';. I keep telling my husband that this wouldn%26#39;t be so expensive if we would just move there, and he%26#39;s even had a couple of offers. :) I was looking to travel in December during the kids%26#39; winter break, but airfare is really high. If I wanted to go next month it is about half. Is it normal for the airlines to take advantage of travelers during holiday seasons? Does anyone have suggestions on how to get more reasonable fares?

By the way, I had the opportunity to go to the Virgin Islands this summer. They were pretty, but not even close to Kauai.

    Thanks!

    airfare in December?

after Dec 15 the prices do go up. Supply/demand. They drop again after Jan 10 or so.

You could try priceline but don%26#39;t hold your breath for cheapies at thanksgiving/christmas/spring break.

    Activities for One on Maui?

I may be spending some of the time on Maui by myself. Besides laying on the beach (which I will enjoy), can anyone suggest any sights or activities for one? I have never been to Maui, I would like to sightsee and take loads of pictures. I would like to try snorkeling but not so sure by myself?

    Activities for One on Maui?

The Road to Hana and Haleakala%26#39;s Summit%26#39;s should be on your list for sure.

I can%26#39;t say why, but I drove the RTH one day by myself several years ago and the journey was sort of a defining moment for me. I ended up moving to the islands after that trip. I was single then; but by my next visit to Maui I was married. Funny what you can discover about yourself in Hawaii, especially when alone. For me it was Waikamoi Forest on the Road to Hana.

Hope you have a great trip. I%26#39;m sure others will have plenty of other recommendations for you as well.

    Activities for One on Maui?

I went to Maui solo last year. I went to a luau - met a very nice family there. I went snorkeling with Trilogy, and had a great time. Of course, I would recommend driving the Road to Hana - it was somehow peaceful driving it alone.

I%26#39;m leaving in 4 days - this time with a friend. A totally different experience, but I wouldn%26#39;t trade my first time in Maui solo.

We did the Paragon Snorkel Trip to Lanai and really liked it. This would be very comfortable for a single person because of the small size of the group. The guys on the boat would be great for helping a first time snorkeler. Check them out. Have fun.

    which luau in Maui?

I haven%26#39;t been able to find much on the different luau%26#39;s in West Maui. Can you help me with the differences?

For instance the Sheraton says they include arts %26amp; crafts - what are they talking about? Making them? The Royal Lahaina luau says the same.

Are they all huge - like 200 people or are there smaller ones?

Which ones are on the beach? How is the food at these 2 luau%26#39;s? all suggestions appreciated.

My Husband and mom in law are going to Maui in April 2007, and the arts %26amp; crafts thing would be important to her. The food %26amp; setting to me. Are the shows pretty similar? Thanks ahead of time for sharing your experiences with me.

    which luau in Maui?

Would vote for Old Lahaina Luau. They also have arts and crafts for sale. The setting is lovely, on the beach and the food, drinks and show are good. Dusty will now write about the lack of fire knife dancer.

    which luau in Maui?

';How is the food'; They are all buffet except the Feast of lei lei where they serve you. As to the quality, anytime you cook 200 meals at once do not expect it to be 5 stars. It is good but by no means gourmet.

The only one%26#39;s I know of are near the water.

As for the shows, yes I would say they are similar.

Should you go to one? I think so. As far as I know the only place you can go to a luau is Hawaii and pretty much everyone I know has gone to at least one when they visited, if for no other reason than to say they did when they get back and people ask.

Most people think the luau will be like Holloywood has shown them over the years, they aren%26#39;t but they can be fun.

A friend who worked in Maui for 2 years told me that luau%26#39;s are overpriced and touristy, and that the best thing I could do would be to save my money for a nice dinner cruise, such as the Pacific Whale Foundation%26#39;s sunset cruise. If I had to choose only one (a dinner cruise or luau) which is more bang for my buck?

I%26#39;d also vote for Old Lahaina Luau. I%26#39;ve never heard anything negative about them, and they are pretty authentic as far as I can tell.

Old Lahaina Luau by far the best of the bunch. I much preferred it when it was still at 505 Front St., it%26#39;s gotten so large now, it%26#39;s almost like the ones on Oahu, but still a good show.

Good question. We are considering The Drums of the Pacific. We thought are 4 1/2 year old would enjoy it and that we could walk from our hotel.

If it was just my dh and myself, I would like the Feast at Lele or Old Lahaina Luau. I know they are touristy but that is what we are and some things, like a luau are really Hawaiin and would add to our overall experience of Hawaii.

    Just my thoughts.

  • Kauai Nov. 16-23 help

Could I get advice on this time? Weather, Food. Attraction. Im staying at the POno Kai in Kapaa. Thought this was a centralized location for North and South Shore. Any great spa%26#39;s for a good price? Help appreciated!!!!!

    Kauai Nov. 16-23 help

    Hi -

We will be there during that time as well. Normally, the weather is pretty good, just before it starts getting rainy up north. There%26#39;s a great place for breakfast right by the Pono Kai -- the Ono Family Restaurant. It%26#39;s a local place, with great food. I don%26#39;t know if you like golf, but the PGA Grand Slam will be played in Poipu while you are there -- they will have Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, and two others playing. Can%26#39;t help you with the spas.

June Weather for a Condo with No AC in June 07?

We are staying on the North Shore in Pali Ke Kua June 9 - 21 2007. There is no AC. We stayed in the same room in early May 2006 and had no problem with heat. Will June get much hotter? Will we have a problem with heat? What is June weather usually like?

June Weather for a Condo with No AC in June 07?

Well, I have stayed on the Northshore in July and August with just ceiling fans and was fine . . . . I guess it%26#39;s a personal preference. I have heard that of all the months, August is generally the most hot and humid, and we felt fine . . . but I must state we weren%26#39;t in our rooms much until evening, as we were too busy on the beach! :)

June Weather for a Condo with No AC in June 07?

I really doubt that you%26#39;ll be too warm at Pali Ke Kua in June. The only thing we havenoticed is that sometimes it gets a little warm and humid in the bathrooms after showers.

    Menehune Shores

Has anyone stayed here? I tried looking on TA%26#39;s hotel/condo reviews and there are not very many reviews for the complex.

We reserved a 3bd condo here for our trip. But, while I have seen a ton of other places mentioned in Kihei, I have not seen anyone mention this place.

Any locals or seasoned travelers to Maui have any heads up advice.

    Menehune Shores

    Lisa,

We had a 6th story penthouse booked at Menehune Shores but ended up staying just down the beach at the Luana Kai when we realized our wives both have mild vertigo. Because we were going to stay there, we did walk up the beach and viewed a 1 br and 2 br, and I can say we would not have been disapointed to stay there. The 1 br was on the ground floor and while was a bit small, was very clean and well appointed. The 2 br was on the 3rd floor and was smaller than our 2 br at the Luana Kai, but very clean and well appointed. The lanai seemed very small but that was the only thing I didn%26#39;t like.

BTW, there is a nice little restaurant on the ground floor. Nothing fancy but good food and great views. Had breakfast there 2 days.

I%26#39;m sure by now you realize that for the most part, you won%26#39;t walk out from any resort in the north Kihei area and snorkel, but they do clean the beaches everyday and we waded and swam with no problems at all. We will stay in north Kihei, probably at the Luana Kai, on our trip we are planning for 2008.

    Menehune Shores

We have not stayed there but friends of ours stayed there last year at the same time as we were in Maui and we visited them at their condo several times. The one they stayed in was updated and very clean. They book it directly from the owner and and were very pleased with the whole complexed. They will be going back again this year.

P.S. They view from the roof top BBQ area was great.

Menehune Shores has a better chance of getting full on ocean views. It%26#39;s a huge 6 story semi-circular behemoth of a building pushed practically right out onto the shore. Be aware that one end of the semi circle is parallel to the shore so the complex actually veers away from the water. There are 26 units per floor where the lower number units are facing the ocean and higher numbers units are more sideways to the blue and closer to Kihei Road. There is a disappearing beach below the seawall out front that gets swallowed up in the late morning/early afternoon but is more of a bait collecting area for locals than a swimming spot anyway. Not much in the way of grounds, mostly just parking lot.

The Luana Kai has very nice grounds but is just not in the same league for ocean views unless you are in building A or D. Also, the Luana Kai has no elevators, so if you are on the third floor, it can be a bit of a drag. Especially during check in and check out with luggage. The Luana Kai generally is the most aggressively discounted resort on the north Kihei oceanfront, so you will most likely find better deals there.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure. We have a ground floor, oceanfront unit. I was just a little worried, like I said, because I have not heard any mention of it along the board!

    Helicopter on Kauai

We will be spending a week on Maui and our last 3 days will be on Kauai. I%26#39;ve heard that the Kauai helicopter trip has spectacular scenery and would really like to go.

However, I hear that it frequently rains in Kauai and with only 3 days on the island, what are my chances of getting on a helicopter?

Has anyone been on a helicopter tour of Maui? How do the two islands compare for scenery?

    Helicopter on Kauai

If you have the chance, take a helicopter tour of Kauai. Of all the islands I stand by it being the best. The Big Island is a close second, but Kauai remains my top choice.

Don%26#39;t let the rain worry you... unless it%26#39;s horrible, most will still fly and the rain is only bad in a few places. On my last trip around the island in the air it was rainy almost everywhere... except the one place it almost ALWAYS rains... Wai%26#39;ale%26#39;ale Crater. The views inside the crater alone made it worth it that trip.

But seeing Na Pali from the air is a treat you shouldn%26#39;t miss :)

    Helicopter on Kauai

The helicopter trip is a must do in my books, and it may rain in some areas at some times but in my trip it really had very little effect on our activities. Wind and a foggy day did however cancel our original day, and we had to rebook several days later. Had there been more days left in our vacation I would have done it again. My on line album is here, copy %26amp; paste to see what the flight fills your eyes with.

    http://tinyurl.com/eynzh

Do NOT miss the helicopter on Kaua%26#39;i. It%26#39;s like nothing you%26#39;ve ever seen before. A little rain can be a good thing; it brings out the waterfalls.

While it does frequently rain on Kaua%26#39;i, it does on most other islands, too. Depends on where you are on the island. Mount Waialeale is the wettest spot on earth, and you%26#39;ll find a pretty rainy belt around it, but Kaua%26#39;i is mostly beautiful and sunny... somewhere. If it rains, just wait a little; it will usually quit as the trade shower blows through.

I also just remembered this... if you can, take a tours off flight. I did it on the Big Island this summer for the first time and it was incredible. I don%26#39;t think I can ever fly with the doors on again and be satisfied. Just incredible how much more vibrant everything is without the window glare.

As for videos... some are worth it, others aren%26#39;t. I bought one once from Safari and my wife and I both agree it%26#39;s not worth it. Blue Hawaiian however might have better quality. Never have bought one from them.

    Kapalua Golf Questions

Does anyone know what the greens fees are for Oct? Also which of the 3 courses is the ';MUST'; play?

As far as ';must play'; only you can decide that.

    Kapalua Golf Questions

definitely the plantation course! I also remember seeing some discounts in the free magazines around the island. BEAUTIFUL courses!! There are also some beautiful courses around Wailea. We had dinner last year with a couple and he played the P/C and said he ended up taking pictures on nearly every hole.

My husband is a huge golfer and loved Plantation. I rode along and it really is a gorgeous course. Every hole is picturesque and my husband was challenged so much that he played it again the next morning to put what he learned about the course the prior day to use (score didn%26#39;t change more than a point, though ;)

I am posting this instead of both of us together as we have done in the past, so it%26#39;s easier to read. Hope you enjoy.

This trip was about rest and relaxation. This was our first real vacation in 20 years. We only booked 1 activity, The Feast at Lele luau. We booked this 4 months in advance. We did one drive around day, then a rest day, then a drive, then a rest. This worked very well for us. We knew we wouldn’t have time in a week to do it all, so we picked a few things and enjoyed the hell out of them. We can’t pick a favorite thing because we loved it all. We loved the Westin Resort and Spa. It was busy and there were lots of kids, but the service was spectacular. We enjoyed watching and interacting with the other guests and were not bothered by the kids or people. We feel so relaxed, even still and will never forget this special time we had together.

    Day 1 8/24

We left the house at 6am and got to the Thrifty parking lot at Seatac at 7am. We parked the car and took the shuttle to the airport. Checked in our bags and then went outside for a last cigarette. We then went through security and found the airport bar. Wanted to calm the nerves a little. I had a red beer and Steve had a couple of double bloody marys.

We boarded our flight and tried to watch the Five People you Meet in Heaven on the dvd player. I couldn’t hear out of my headphones, so gave up, but Steve watched it. Mission Impossible was the movie on the plane. The planes screen also showed where we were headed, with a map and a plane icon. This was fun to follow. We finally saw some land and we got really excited. We had been on the plane for almost 6 hours. I was choking back tears I was so happy.

After we got off the plane I was looking for the lei greeters, as I had ordered one for Steve. I saw them but didn’t see Steve’s name. I walked right past them, then turned around to check again. Steve followed me with a “what the heck are you doing look on his face.” I told him to look at the sign and he was really surprised. A pretty girl placed it around his neck. He then told me he couldn’t figure out what I was doing because the leis were for special people. I told him that he WAS a special person. We walked to the baggage claim and I had a smoke while Steve waited for the luggage. It came in about 10 minutes. We then got on the shuttle to Hertz. There was no line. We got a white Ford Focus. No ashtray in car. Started driving to hotel. It was a beautiful drive. Saw waves crashing over the sea wall. Steve said it reminded him of Santa Barbara. Saw lots of surfers and passed by a fruit stand selling pineapple and coconuts. We are truly in Maui now.

Got to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. Valet comes right up to our car and opens door for us. Very friendly and welcoming. We tip him $5 and walk in. He sees that there is no greeter to give us our leis, so he runs in to give them to us. He tells us that the tea leaves are for the guys. Puts them on us and once again welcomes us. Hotel is beautiful. We wait in line about 5 minutes to check in. It was 2:15 and room was not ready. We are told that we will be in a very nice ocean front room. We go to the bar to wait until after 3 to get our key. I have a pina colada made with fresh pineapple. The bartender gives me lots of samples of the different tropical drinks. I was in heaven! He also tells me that they are all the same price and which ones have 3 shots so I can get my moneys worth. We went to the desk at 3:15 and room was not ready yet, but they would call our cell phone when it was, so we go to bathrooms to put on our bathing suits as it was very hot and humid. We still had on our jeans and tennis shoes. Got changed and found a nice spot to sit overlooking the waterfalls. It was so lovely. There was another couple there who was also waiting. Chatted with them for a few minutes and them we both got the call that our rooms were ready.

We got room # 790 on the 7th floor ocean front beach tower. We were told we were very lucky to get this room as there are only 3 Premium Deluxe Ocean view room categories that front the ocean on each floor. I think the next step up is a suite. Don’t want to say how much we paid, but you do get what you pay for. The view was definitely breathtaking. Tropico restaurant was right below us. The porter came up with the bags. He was very friendly and set our bags on stands and asked us if he could answer any questions for us about the hotel. He also offered to get us ice. Tip him $5.

Time to go downstairs and hit the pool. Got towels and wristbands at the towel stand. (Wristbands help so non-hotel guests don’t horn in on our pool) Again staff was very friendly. Pool area is very busy. Lots of people! Find 2 empty padded lounge chairs in the adults only pool. Jump in and water is refreshing. The temperature was just perfect to cool off. We found the water slide and get in line. Ask cute little girl if it was scary. She says no and asks me if I want to go fast. I tell her I do and she tells me to cross my legs and keep them straight and to spread them if I want to slow down. She cracked me up. I’m thinking the spreading legs thing may not be for me. My turn came and I’m going slow even though my legs are straight. I’m thinking I must be too big or too old or something. Then all of a sudden I was going really fast and it was great! We go to the pool bar to get another drink to take back to our lounge chairs. I get a $9 Mai Tai and Steve gets a $6.50 can of Coors Light. Finish those and then went to beach to body surf. It was a blast! Got sand everywhere where you don’t want sand. Waves broke very close to shore and pretty much dump you on the beach.

Go up to room and shower then walk over to Sheraton to watch the cliff diver. Pretty nice sunset. See hula dancer and guitar player at Keka%26#39;a Terrace at the Sheraton and decide to eat there. Order bottle of wine. (Red of course) Then waiter tells us that the cliff diver will be coming around with a big fish that he caught in the ocean. We weren’t really sure what he was talking about. Next thing you know, here comes the cliff diver right over to our table with a big red snapper! He was still dripping wet from his dive and he tells us that he caught this at an ancient Hawaiian fishing ground called Safeway. Very funny! Waiter takes our picture with him and his fish. Lots of fun. Then order coconut prawns and sashimi for appetizers. Delicious! Then we are told that we can go to the salad bar. Not really salad bar fans. Didn’t really want to get up, but we go anyway. The salad bar is inside and there is air blowing from somewhere and lots of it. My skirt blows up as I’m trying to get my salad. Steve tells me that I look like Marilyn Monroe. Another guy comes in and tells me the same thing. I should have worn my good panties. Don’t wear a skirt to the salad bar that’s all I can say. Salad bar was huge with lots of choices. Green salad, pasta and shrimp salads. cheeses and cold cuts. Finish salad and then Steve has Mahi Mahi (Steve kept calling it Maui Maui) and I have seafood linguine. (Both to die for) I couldn’t finish mine I was so stuffed.

After dinner we headed to Whalers Village to find the ABC store. Bought beer, lotion and water. Head back up to room to go to bed.

    Day 2

Wake up at 3am. Managed to fall back asleep until 5. Sat on lanai drinking hot chocolate waiting for Steve to wake up. When he woke up, we sat and read the paper, drank coffee and watched the sea and the waves. Showered and went to McDonalds at Whalers Village so I could get an egg mcmuffin, which I get a craving for once in a while. (Very inexpensive breakfast) Steve got more coffee. Then headed over to Maui dive shop (also in Whalers Village) to rent snorkel gear. We didn’t have to wait in line, as we got there right when they opened. Gave us nice gear with a plastic fish card so we can see the names of the fish.

Walked to black rock and found a shady spot under a tree. A little girl told us the water wasn’t clear today and that we wouldn’t see any fish. We went out anyway. Kid was right, water wasn’t very clear. We saw a turtle for a few seconds and then saw a puffer fish and a black and gold butterfly fish. Then see another big turtle, thanks to another person who shouted “TURTLE”. It swam right under us. What a sight! We couldn’t have been happier. I felt our whole trip was now perfect because of that one turtle. That’s what I came to Maui for. I just love turtles.

Sat under tree again and 2 local guys come and sit by us. They had a cute little 8-week-old puppy. The other family by us babysat the puppy while the guys went in the ocean with their boogie boards. We watched them pick up some trash that was on the beach. When they came back, we ask them what kind of tree this was. They said they didn’t know, but they hated this kind because it puts round seedpods into the sea and they float around everywhere. We chatted a bit and played with the puppy. Then another family with a rude mother who doesn’t like local puppies comes and plunks her stuff pretty much on top of us all. She got upset because the puppy walked across her mat and knocked over her drink. It had a lid and I don’t think much spilled. Local guy offered to buy her another drink and apologized for the puppy, but nothing he said mattered. She was not very happy. (Pretty much a total b word) She said that she now had sand on her. We thought that was pretty funny because when we go to the beach we pretty much know that sand is going to get on us. Then more people came. Yes, another gal who doesn’t like local puppies. She doesn’t understand why she has to be by the puppy and asks local if he has a shorter leash. She was pretty snappy. We ask local if all the tourists are this rude. I mean we were there first, we were having a great time and visiting with everyone. Then people come, sit on top of us and complain. They could see there was a puppy. Anyway, he tells us a lot of them are, then picks up more trash and tells us that they are also very messy. We say our good byes and head to Whalers Village for lunch.

Went to the pizza place. I had a slice of vegetarian and Steve had a pinini. We ate our lunch on the beach, and poured our beer into coke cups. Steve met a guy from Philadelphia and they chatted while cooling off in the ocean. The waves were pretty rough. I went in and got slammed onto the beach I was lucky I wasn’t hurt. And I literally ate sand. I was trying to get it back up. Was having a hard time. Got it packed in my ear and tried to wash off, but water was too rough so went back to shower on beach. Then Steve did the same trick, got slammed onto sand got nice rash on his chest and ripped nipple ring ball out. He had to hold a wet towel on his chest. We went back to our room and I was gagging sand the whole way. Barely got room door open and I threw up. But hey, at least the sand came out. Got in shower and couldn’t get sand out of hair or ears. This is why hotel drains are clogged. We thought we got most of sand off at beach shower but we were wrong. It was really bad. Steve had a pocket full of sand, and I had tons of it between my suit and it’s liner. What a mess. Use q-tip in ear and cotton comes off and stays in my ear for the rest of trip. Didn’t bother me at all, but I knew it was in there. (Doctor got it out when I got home.)

Finally get most of sand off and get dressed for The Feast at Lele. Drove to Lahina and wait 10 minutes to pay for after 4pm parking. This is right across from 505 Front street. Seemed silly to wait, but there were no other nighttime pay options. We walked around and found place for nipple ring repair. And there was no charge. But the ball was bigger then his other one, so Steve now became the “big baller” for the rest of the trip. Walked over to Banyan tree took pics and saw Jesus Man. Then went to Blue Lagoon bar and had a couple of Coors Lights. Bought a few souvenirs then went to Heacocks bar. Found out they have a lobster dinner on Monday nights for $30 so we planned to go back then to eat there. I was able to smoke in Heacocks but the bartender told me that starting in November there will be no smoking in any bars on Maui with a 30 foot from doors rule. She was upset because it wasn’t put up for a vote. I think it would have passed anyway as there are not many smokers anymore.

Headed for the Feast at Lele luau and there were 2 locals set up with some pretty cool stuff to buy. Steve got a monkey wood tiki, which the artist signed by carving his name, the date and the name of the tiki god on the bottom. I got a turtle purse, a turtle necklace, a monkey wood turtle. And the best was we got 6 coconut palm baskets for $15. Feast at Lele was the BOMB! We LOVED it. Loved the food, loved the show, loved the service. The girls were beautiful with tattoos in very sexy places. (Noticed lots of the locals have tattoos of the Hawaiian Islands) The shaking of the hips, the costumes, the fire dancing, the rhythm sticks. It was amazing, and well worth every penny. One thing of note, we kicked our sandals off and went barefoot. Some people wore ties and spiked heals. They looked really silly and had a hard time walking. Besides that, it’s humid, no need to dress up!

Went back to hotel and got free valet because the lot was full. Spent rest of evening on lanai watching the sea.

    Day 3

Woke up around 6 and had cashews and coffee for breakfast on the lanai while Steve read the Maui News newspaper. Also woke up to bad heat rash on thighs. Not use to the humidity.

We decided to drive north on hwy 30 to find Honolua bay for some snorkeling. We packed beer and snacks and snorkel gear. Drove and stopped at many scenic spots. Saw tide pools, sea cliffs, red cliffs and lots of interesting flora. Got to the bay, not too crowded, found parking. Walked down stairs, found shady spot. Put digital camera and cell phone in waterproof bag, and buried it in the sand below our towels. We went snorkeling and saw lots of fish. We went pretty far out. We took the underwater camera with us. Pictures came out pretty bad, but still had fun trying and got a couple of shots of some blue fish. Had a beer on the beach afterwards and climbed on some lava rocks. When we got up to our car there was no parking left and some cars where pretty much on the road.

After we left the bay we continued on north hwy 30. Stopped at a fruit stand at Honokonau cove bought some stubby bananas and some passion fruit. Gal was making necklaces out of shells. They were very pretty. Drove some more and found weird rock place. There were lots of rock stacks and a weird rock maze. Can’t describe it other then to say it was a weird rock place. Saw what we think was mushroom rock, but not too sure on that. We thought we would go all the way around, but got scared because we only had a Ford Focus. No, not really, we just didn’t want to back up on the one lane road. We really enjoyed the wind at some spots on the north end. It felt like home. And it was so much cooler then at our hotel. So, we got turned around and found the road we were looking for on the way up. Lower Hapahani road or something like that. This put us a little closer to the sea, so we got to check out Kapalua and Kahana.

We were starving by this time because we didn’t eat our snacks. So we went to Lahaina and went to Bubba Gumps. Food was pretty good, we had coconut shrimp, peel and eat shrimp and fried shrimp. Mixed platter, think it was called shrimp feast or something like that. Not spectacular, but good. Steve had some crazy tropical cocktail and got to keep the glass. I had a bloody mary with a shrimp in it.

Then we went back to hotel and showered. Went down to the pool area and watched the most amazing fabulous sunset ever. It lasted way past 8 o-clock. We watched it for over 2 hours. The colors were amazing. We saw so many shapes in the clouds. Watched a dragon turn into a rat and so on. We were so relaxed. This may sound weird but the best part was that we didn’t have our camera. There was nothing to take away from the enjoyment of the wonder we saw. Everyone was talking about it the next day. Even the locals said it was one of the best they had ever seen.

    Day 4

Sunday Day of rest. Today was cloudy, which made it a perfect day to lay by the pool. It was still hot, but not as hot and no wind. We put on our suits and got down there about 7:30. Found great end lounge chairs that overlooked the adult pool and the sea. I got a breakfast croissant from the hotel coffee stand. We laid and relaxed and had coffee and breakfast. At 11, we snuck our soft cooler with about 6 beers in it down to the pool. (No outside food or drink allowed) Steve ordered every other beer from the cabana girl. I ordered a pina colada. We also ordered a basket of chips and veggies that came with salsa, guacamole and ranch dressing. It was great to be waited on all day long. LOVED IT! We lay around, swam, and lay around some more. Found hidden cave in waterfall with a cold water Jacuzzi. Had a lemon lime shaved ice, which I later added a shot of tequila to. At 4pm, we were tired from all this hard work of laying around so we went up to the room to rest a little.

Then we showered and went to the ABC store for more beer and souvenirs. Then we walked south on the beach walk. Checked out the Kaanapali Ali, Marriott and the Hyatt. The Marriott and the Hyatt both have great areas for little kids. Pirate ships, and sandy bottom pools and such. Very cute! Came back and had dinner at Tropicos. Steve liked it better then I did. He had swordfish and I had Ahi. I was excited because it came with mashed potatoes, but when I got it, all the food was pilled on top of each other, potato, asparagus, and then the ahi with some crunchy noodle things on top of that. I prefer my food separate from each other so I can taste all the flavors. Ahi was ok, but not the best quality. Did enjoy a martini called “love Potion” Went upstairs and fell asleep watching a movie.

    Day 5

Got up, read paper and had coffee on lanai, loved starting everyday this way. Today was drive to Haleakala day, House Of the Sun! We stopped and got gas in Kahului and bought some funny, huge sunglasses for our daughter. Big is in, and these are BIG. Passed through wonderful smelling eucalyptus groves. Stopped at Kula lodge and bought a sandwich. Drove to the very top, through the clouds, and it was mostly sunny and hot at the top. We wore shorts, tanks and tennis shoes. But had jeans and coats in the car. This was now about 11am. We walked around and couldn’t find the crater, or should I say the main crater. Steve kept saying is this it? And I would say no, that’s not it. It’s huge with cinder cones. He said well this is “it” cause we are up here. Funny! Felt kind of dumb that we couldn’t find it. Saw the Big Island, which was really cool. Fabulous views of the sea. Then we saw a woman smoking at 10000 feet. Couldn’t believe it. I didn’t smoke again until we got down to the bottom. Anyway, went down to lower visitor center, and then we saw what we came for. The clouds parted for us 2 fire signs, or so we thought. We are so glad that we did this because it was the most amazing site. There is no way to describe it and the pictures don’t do it justice. It was so strangely beautiful! We walked down a trail for a while and took pictures and just kept saying WOW! It was just stunning. What a way to spend our anniversary.

Down the mountain for dinner. Went to Heacocks in Lahaina. Sat in bar to eat dinner so I could smoke. Wanted to watch the Feast at Lele again to see what it was like for free. First off, it is not the same at all; in fact it looked kind of lame from where we were. You don’t get the feel of the show, no interaction; none of the great sounds of swishing skirts, and of course none of the great food. We don’t recommend seeing the show this way. If you go, pay it’s well worth it. We ordered lobster dinners for $30 and it was very good. The only bad thing was, that we had such a great bartender when we first got there, then he got off shift, and the night bartender was a stick in the mud. Barely said 2 words to us. Anyway, we had green salad with blue cheese first. It was very good with lots of fresh crumbles of blue cheese. Loved the lobster, and the rice. Got up to go wash our hands, because no towels were brought to us. Stick in the mud did come and wash off our table. Went back to hotel and had our free bottle of champagne on the lanai.

    Day 6

Today our last full day we decided to spend it on the beach. I went down at about 8am and rented 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella ($25) from the hotel. I asked to be on the end, and that is where he put us. Very nice guy, we chatted for a while and when he found out it was our last day, he gave me a boogie board to use for free. We took our cooler of water and beer down to the beach and also bought and shared another breakfast croissant. We snorkeled off the beach and saw a ton of pretty fish and an eel. It was clear and beautiful. I found lots of shells and a tiny toy dolphin and dog in the water. I was looking for lost rings or jewelry, but found none. I really enjoyed diving down closer to the fish. We were very thankful for the umbrella, as it was really hot. It did get pretty windy. At 3pm we went up to the room and showered to get ready to go on our Teralani dinner cruise. We got on the catamaran in front of Whalers Village. We loved this activity. It was windy and we got to put up the sail. The crew was awesome. Very funny and the service was great. We only had about 20 people on our boat, so there was lots of room, and lots of food. They served antipasto, pasta salad with artichokes and mushrooms, cesar salad, rotini pasta with red sauce, some sort of fish, chicken and bread. It was all pretty good, and you could get as much booze in your mai tai as you wanted. Yes we boozed it up pretty well. Partied with 2 other couples, one Arizona transplant from New York City, and the other couple was from California. We had a great time and the captain was laughing at us whooping it up at the back of the boat. The sunset was great and we saw rainbows all over the place. He pulled in so we could watch the cliff diver at the Sheraton again. Not sure why some don’t like booze cruises, but we loved ours and it was a great way to spend our last night.

When we got back to the beach we continued in our revelry. We decided to go on a hunt for the best mai tai. We went to Leilanis first, and there’s were awesome. The bartender was great and he called us by name. Then we went to the Rusty Harpoon. There’s were pretty bad, served in too big a glass, and it was boring there. So then we went to the Hula grill. They came in second. Ended the night back at Leilanis for the #1 mai tai and the bartender still remembered our names. I think at this point we didn’t remember our names, so it was good of him to remind us. We ordered some nachos, which were pretty good at this point, then headed up to the room to go to bed.

    Day 7

Woke up and had the usual coffee and paper on the lanai. Then we threw a ton of stuff away to make room in our 2 suitcases for all of the stuff we bought. We threw out our sunscreen, and toothpaste and lotion and some of our snacks. Filled 2 trashcans. Bet the maids had a heyday with all the stuff we left behind. Packed our stuff up and hauled it ourselves down to the valet. Got the car, and left our island home. So sad!

We drove to Kahului and went to the Harley Davidson shop to buy some shirts for some friends. We were in luck, buy 3 get 1 free. So that was a money saver. Then we went to Dennys for breakfast. Sat across from a big party of locals and it was someone’s birthday. This was fun to be by. Our waiter was a slug. He came and took our order and said “right away” but we waited 45 minutes for our food. Only got 2 refills on our coffee. When we got our food, we got the Tabasco and catsup from another table because he never brought it. He also brought us pancakes instead of the wheat toast we ordered. He told us that “right away” the toast would come but it never did. It was really pretty funny, and had us laughing the whole time.

We heard you could get cheap shirts at Walmart so we went there. Steve told me he has never been to a Walmart. Couldn’t believe that. So I told him I would show him the ropes of cheap shopping. We bought 5 Maui t-shirts. They were $3.19 a piece. Then bought 2 more for $4.99 for our neighbor’s kids. Steve bought a Maui shaka hat for $1.99 for a coworker and wore it home so it wouldn’t get squished.

Time to return the rental car. That was easy and painless. Then hoped on shuttle to airport. Didn’t enjoy this part very much. It was really hot, had to stand in line, Hawaiian air self check in screen wouldn’t accept our confirmation number so had to have the girl check in for us. Woman stood in our way so we couldn’t get our luggage on the scale, finally asked her to move. It was all very unorganized and chaotic. Got through the mess, and then went to the squish a penny machines and got 2 for our collection. Went into the bar and had a couple of beers. Bartenders were not friendly and we couldn’t wait to get out of there. Had one last smoke and waited to board our plane. A little late in boarding. Had lots of crying babies on our flight. It’s so hard for them, and us. Fell asleep for part of the flight. When we arrived, we had to wait 45 minutes for our baggage. It was weird like the baggage handlers put 10 bags up, and then took a very long break. Only had to wait a few minutes for the Thrifty shuttle where we parked our jeep.

The cool Seattle air sure felt like home.

    Long Trip Report and Pictures

Great report! The link to the pictures didn%26#39;t seem to work, though (got an ';Album not available'; message)!

Seems like you two had a great time. I cannot wait for our trip- hurry up October 20th!

    Long Trip Report and Pictures

So, did you have any fun? LOL You know it was a good time if idiot waiters didn%26#39;t upset you. It sounds like you had surf there like we had two years ago. The waves at Black Rock were up to 10ft. high and crashed directly on the beach. There was red flags flying everywhere saying not to go in the water. We also went to Honolua on that trip. Thanks for the great report.

I also got that same message on the album.

We had so much fun! Nothing upset us. And we didn%26#39;t have any issues between us. Of course we didn%26#39;t do Hana, so the story might have been different. The waves were rough 2 of the days we were there. And we just HAD to go in the water and body surf. Could have, should have worn rash guards at least.

Maybe someone who has an easyshare account can help me with the link. It may be kodaks page causing the problem though. Maybe this link will work. If I can%26#39;t get it to work, I will get them up on another site within a few days or so.

    www.kodakgallery.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp…

OK I GOT IT! Thanks to an earlier post by 1lobo1! I guess with Kodak you have to invite yourself to look at your own photos and then post that link here.

    www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp…

    Hope that did the trick.

TwoTigers thanks for the trip report. Where are you from in WA? We live in Marysville and leave for Maui in a week. Your trip report got me so excited. Thanks for searching for the best Mai Tai. We will have to check out Leilanis.

PrincessKila, our family is from Martha Lake. We were just up your way and went to see Peter Frampton at Tulalip. Loved the outside venue. I hope you have a great trip! Bring light casual clothes. I wore shorts and tanks tops most of the time, or my bathing suit. I only put on makeup 1 time, it wasn%26#39;t worth it to put it on. Put my hair up most of the time too. And it was humid, the air felt very thick to us. We were sweaty all the time. Leave room to bring stuff back. Where are you staying?

Great report. Mahalo. Don%26#39;t you just hate it when people put themselves into a situation and then complain instead of move...the puppy and apparently sand hating lady.

Sounds like a terrific trip, and you both had the right attitude to make it so. Seven weeks from today, I%26#39;m there! We%26#39;re planning on doing the sunset cocktail cruise on our last night too, and you made it sound so wonderful, I%26#39;m glad we decided to book it.

    Off to see your photos...

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Wow, those photos are gorgeous! Really, really cool. What kind of camera did you use? Thanks again for the pics...loved %26#39;em.

We have a kodak easy share. But the trick is to get one with at least a 10x optical zoom. We bought it for the trip and couldn%26#39;t be happier. It also has manual settings, which is great, but the auto setting is pretty foolproof!

I%26#39;m glad you all are enjoying our report, and glad the puppy and the dennys story didn%26#39;t come off as if we were complaining about it. Everything that happened just added to the fun. Can%26#39;t really explain it, but that%26#39;s how it was.

  • Castle Island Colony Good or Bad

We are giong to waikiki in Oct/06 with 3 teens and on a budget. Is this a good place to stay.Or have I just thrown my money out the window.Let me know.Thanks.

Castle Island Colony Good or Bad

Haven%26#39;t read or heard anything horribly bad about the place, seems clean and plain (not luxurious). You%26#39;ll be fine so long as you don%26#39;t expect a resort. You have a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, however, so you won%26#39;t be going back and forth from the room to the beach very much. If you are planning lots of non-Waikiki-beach activities (Haunama Bay, Arizona Memorial, Polynesian Cultural Center, North Shore, Kailua, etc), you won%26#39;t care much about the distance to the beach.

Castle Island Colony Good or Bad

My wife and I stayed there for two nights during our quick stop on Oahu before heading to the Big Island. It%26#39;s nothing special, but depending on what you%26#39;re looking for it could be just fine.

It%26#39;s a budget hotel, make no mistake about it. The bed wasn%26#39;t that comfortable and I wouldn%26#39;t spend time laying around the pool, but it you%26#39;re just using it as a place to lay your head it%26#39;s just fine.

We were upgraded to a diamond head view on an upper floor and it was a magnificent view. Parking can be a pain if you get back late at night as the garage is small, and you share the building with long term residents. I found as long as you are courteous of them and stay out of their way, they are very friendly.

I stayed there 2 years ago- I had a deluxe kitchenette on a high floor-great views of the ocean and the canal and mountains... my room was clean - not fancy at all but very tolerable, bathroom was kind of small, no problems with rodents, bugs or maid service-the a/c leaked a bit but did it%26#39;s job. The lanai does make the time in the room worthwhile as it is very large and comfortable.

    Outrigger Maui Eldorado?

I have heard a number of things, excellent and not so great, about the Maui Eldorado. Just booked reservations through American Airlines (I was assured that having AA as an intermidiary means the Outrigger cannot kick us to another hotel if overbooked, like some people said in their reviews) and got a really reasonable package deal with rental car, hotel, and airfare. I was wondering if anyone has stayed in a studio condo at the Eldorado... people always rave about the one and two bedrooms but haven%26#39;t heard much about studio accomodations. Trying to figure out if it%26#39;s worth it to pay more for more space, although there are only two of us, and I don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ll need it. If anyone has candid photos of the Eldorado rooms that would help too.

    Outrigger Maui Eldorado?

We stayed in unit K211 last year (a studio) and had a great time. Only two of us, so no privacy issues, parking was free at that time, but has gone to 5$ a day now. Cabana was GREAT! Main desk people were really aloof, but other than that, no problems. Humungous pool, not alot of landscaping since it%26#39;s on top of the parking garage, put sitting in a heated pool at night is really great.

    Outrigger Maui Eldorado?

Rexster, did you buy groceries and if so where?

The Eldorado is right between Lahaina and Honokowai. There%26#39;s a Star market just off the main highway in Honokowai, and there%26#39;s a Safeway just north of Lahaina at the Cannery Mall. Foodland is in Lahaina, and there%26#39;s another Foodland in Napili. When we were there the Safeway had SERIOUS problems with its freezers and we only went there once or twice. We never loaded up on anything, since we were so closed to everything. If we needed anything, I just hopped in the car and got it. Or we would stop on the way back to the condo for a dinner meal in the afternoon.

We were there for 3 weeks, and we did about 3/4 of our meals in the condo; the lanai we had was very good sized, and we did a number of our meals out there. Nothing like having breakfast on your lanai and watching the whales just off shore.

What time of year did you go that you were able to see whales from the Lanai? We will be there for Thanksgiving.

    Aloha

Thanksgiving is early for whales to start showing up, you%26#39;ll be lucky to see one. They really start showing up around late Dec/early January through March. We%26#39;ve been to Maui over the years during Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year%26#39;s; almost every month of the year except the true summer months since 1990.

well, i%26#39;ll keep my fingers crossed that we see that one. =)

    Cheap Waikiki Hotels

Hi, We are three aussie girls looking at spending a week in Hawaii (Waikiki) in March. On a budget and looking at good cheap property recommendations!

We have been looking at the Pacific Beach hotel, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani or the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber. None of these seem to have nice pool areas though!!

    Any thoughts/suggestions??

    Cheap Waikiki Hotels

Try the Aloha Surf Hotel in Waikiki. It is a decent hotel with a smaller, but nice pool. THe entire hotel was revamped several years ago. I would stay there again. Aloha, Banana Joe

    Cheap Waikiki Hotels

I%26#39;ve only walked by the pool at Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. It seemed nice to me.

Only 1/2 block from the beach.

    Hi aussiegirl3,

Alot of hotels in Hawaii do not have pools unless you are prepared to pay big $$ for resort type hotels like Sheraton, Hilton Hawaiian Village, Halekulani, so keep this in mind if you are wanting a hotel with a nice pool.

The hotels that do have pools are pretty standard pools. I dont know how important the pool is to you %26amp; your friends, but the beach in Waikiki is absolutely beautiful and much nicer than some of the pools at hotels.

I will say that we have stayed at Pacific Beach Hotel 3 times over the past 5 years and love it, so much so we are back there again next May for 4th time. It is right opposite Waikiki Beach on Kalakaua Ave with walking distance to International Marketplace, shops and restaruants. There are 2 towers to PBH, being Oceanarium Tower (about 40 floors) and the Beach Tower (about 17 floors). We love the Beach Tower oceanfront rooms as they have unobstructed views across the beach !!!

PBH does have a pretty standard pool, it also has coin laundry and Rainforest Spa %26amp; Massage Centre on the same level as the pool area. On the ground floor is ABC Store (not like our ABC shops) it is a convenience shop on every corner in Waikiki (LOL) which sells food, drinks, souviners etc. Also on the ground floor is Dollar Car Rentals, Hagendaaz ice cream. McDonalds is right next door if you want a cheap snack and Cheeseburger in Paradise on the other corner next door.

Overall the hotel is located in fantastic place and the rooms are reasonably spacious, clean and comfortable. Im not familiar with the ins/outs of the other 2 hotels you have mentioned so not sure how their pools/rooms etc rate.

    Have a fantastic trip :-)

Why is the pool so important? Waikiki beach is so gorgeous. Normally on vacation we always consider the pool when making a hotel choice but never when we visit Waikiki. We just sunbathe on towels on the beach. If you take the pool out of your equation you will have more and probably cheaper hotel choices.

You%26#39;re threesome, right? Checked to see any condos yet? If not, see:

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/鈥?2582

I may be wrong, but condos with swimming pools, located somewhere along Alawai Canal will look to be affordable. It can wait staying in a 5star hotel. Somewhere down the road, you WILL stay, though.

    Aloha.

    Aloha!

You could stay at the ResortQuest Waikiki Banyan which is a condo which would give you more space and a full kitchen. Plus, the property has a nice pool area with barbecues. You might want to check it out.

    BBrown9825@aol.com

I always stay at the Queen Kapiolani. They have a small pool, but the view is awesome. A short walk to everything and a block from the beach. Have fun Aussie girls!

Thanks guys, advice is much appreciated!! :)

    hi royal grove

Having been several times, I would tell you not to worry about a pool. Honestly. If I were you, I would invest in a rental car and go find some awesome beaches and ditch the pool. My best friend and I did this at Spring Break ~ and we did not regret it at all. So my advice, for what it is worth, is to rent that car and go introduce yourself to my personal favorite beach in all of Oahu ~ Lanaikai.

However, if your heart is SET on the pool idea, take a chance with Hotwire or Priceline and when you pick the Star rating, chose one with 3 stars or higher. We did this in September of 04 and ended up in the Radisson. The hotel was very nice. The pool was rooftop and small, but it did have a pool side bar.

8pm flight: What time should I return my rental car?

My girlfriend and I are planning to take a day trip to Maui from Oahu and I was wondering when would be a safe time to return a rental car at or near the airport for an 8PM flight back to Oahu?

And how early should we plan to get to the airport? Is it the normal 1 1/2 - 2hrs before the flight departs(check-in, security, etc...)?

And just one more question... How long should I expect it to take from landing in Maui, until we%26#39;re in the rental car and on the road?

    Thanks! =o)

8pm flight: What time should I return my rental car?

at 8pm crowds will be minimal so 1 hour will be plenty, worse time of day is the mid morning when it is a mess. With no luggage from plane to car maybe 1/2 hour, depending on the line at the car place.

    tipping

Staying at the Four Seasons in early Dec. I have seen prior posts where people note they tip the employees who get them beach chairs, pool chairs, etc.... How much on average do you tip them?

What%26#39;s the daily rate to tip housekeeping? Are they tipped on a daily basis?

Also does anyone know if they are still charging for the parking?

    Thanks!

    tipping

Ah, another sensitive subject. Today seems to be a day for them ;0) This subject was discussed, at length about a year ago on the Oahu forum and ended up being quite the heated topic.

I don%26#39;t know about the beach chairs, pool chairs or the charging for parking~but I will give you a heads up for how I choose to tip for hotels when traveling.

I tip daily, as often times it is not the same housekeeper every day of your stay. I usually leave a couple of dollars with a note that says for housekeeping. Now some do not tip at all. And that%26#39;s okay. I have just found that I get better service when I do.

    tipping

First, people at FS do not expect tips. You will get the same great service whether you do or not.

    That being said --

We tipped the set up people for beach chairs about $5 per day. They are very nice people, they make sure that the chairs are wrapped in two towels (one for the chair and then a second for the person), and they take your name for when they come around with drinks etc.

Similare service at other hotels in the area runs $75 a day. $5 is a bargain.

They did charge for parking last time. The rate was around $15 per day. I also thought that was a good deal since compared to the room rate it does not add much to the trip and it is extremely convenient. They will do things like close your convertible top, etc. For Haleakala they will tell you what time to be on the road and will also offer you blankets for the ride up. I tipped the valets between $2 and $5, partly depending on how much cash I had at the moment.

FS also offers free non-valet parking. The spots are tight but we never had major problems finding a spot.

I would valet it at the very least the first day since it just makes the entry and the greeting easier.

I am a bit of an expert on FS Maui, with three trips in four years.

    Horseback Riding in Maui

Im an experienced rider interested in taking a horseback tour in Maui this October. I%26#39;ve been looking at Lahaina Stables.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am looking for a place where the horses are well taken care of and the staff is friendly but not too cheesy. :)

    Help! Thanks!

    Horseback Riding in Maui

I%26#39;d recommend Makena Stables... you%26#39;ll ride across the back side of Haleakala, looking down upon La Perouse Bay, and if you tell them you are experienced, they will let you ride more freely (not on a trail or tail-to-tail, but cantering/galloping all over the place). My sister did this years ago and still raves about it.

    Horseback Riding in Maui

We went to Ironwood Ranch in Napili early in July and had a very nice time. We rode though a canyon between some pineapple fields where there was some old ruins and the leader told us alot about local history and life. There was some awesome views. The gal that runs the place has a great sence of humor but is a very serious person. The horses were very well kept. They name there horses after actors so that may be considered cheesy. The staff was very nice and professional.

If you go there say Hi to Owen Wilson for me. Owen is one of their Maui born horses so he lives life on Maui time. Owen has one speed, Owen%26#39;s speed. lol

In all of my web searching I had never heard of Lahaina Stables but I looked at their website and it looks like it might be a nice ride but they don%26#39;t have alot of pics on their site. Their a little more expensive than Ironwood. Ironwoodranch.com has a bunch of pics of their place, trails and horses. I don%26#39;t know anything about the east Maui stables.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I%26#39;ve gone on several rides on Maui (not Lahiana; it sounds really good). The Ironwood I found a little tame (but that was partially due to a couple in our group that had no riding experience). I really enjoyed the Mendez (or is it Mendes) Ranch ride; the guides are real cowboys, you get to run up a hill. the views are amazing. I got to ride a roping horse; very responsive. I also really liked Adventures on Horseback; great horses, and you do get a chance to lope up a grassy hill if you are experienced. Very picturesque also.

    HI SJ,

I%26#39;m actually leaving for Maui on Saturday, we have the lunch ride booked with Lahaina Stables. I will post about it when I get back on the 18th. When do you guys leave?

    - Melody

ps. I%26#39;m also an experienced rider - I rode both English and Western for 12 years.

MAKENA STABLES is wonderful. Pat is a very experienced guide, and the views are amazing. I%26#39;m COMPLETELY TERRIFIED of horses, but my husband surprised me with a ride on our honeymoon and we both had fun.

We are planning to ride at Ironwood. DH has never ridden before, and Ironwood is closer to our condo. I had originally wanted the Mendes Ranch, so that I could ';ride'; more, but the downside is that it%26#39;s on the OTHER side of West Maui, so we opted for Ironwood. They also have the same dogs at the ranch that we have, sorta. Kona~our dog looks exactly like their Australian Shepherds. :)

If you want to go off the beaten path, I highly recommend Maui Stables in Kipahulu near Hana. The horses are kept in pastures all day long and each horse is bathed daily! The ride is the most breathtaking thing I have ever seen. (I won%26#39;t give away the surprise at the end.)

The ranch hands are so nice and they educate you about traditional Hawaiian chants and history durng the ride. We were staying in Hana, but the rest of our group drove in from the ';backside'; of Haleakala in the morning.

    Tell the unforgettable Keoni that Annette and Pedram say ';Aloha!';

wow this has all been so helpful.... i can%26#39;t decide!

questions though, is there a way i can respond to each relpy i got? or do i just put my replies in like this.....

    (im new!)

You can just put your replies in the big white box. :)

If you want, you can address an individual by putting the person%26#39;s screen name at the beggining of your sentences, but use one box to respond. (Example: sjsarge, great questions!)

  • maui surfing lessons

    Hey--

Does anyone know which are the best beginning surfing lessons on MAui? I%26#39;m trying to decide between Royal Lahaina Surf Academy and Goofy Foot for some lessons for my teenagers.

    maui surfing lessons

Our kids had a great time with Goofy Foot, plus whle they were having their lesson, my husband and I were enjoying lunch at PacificO%26#39;s - we could see them from our ocean front table!

    maui surfing lessons

Thanks for your info--I%26#39;m hearing more about Goofy Foot than any other place so it must be pretty good. I think I%26#39;ll do that lunch thing while my kids are at their lesson too--great idea!

We had 5 kids take multiple lessons over a week%26#39;s time at Goofy foot in Lahina, Maui. Suggestions: Choose instructor carefully. Skills vary greatly. Tim was a great teacher %26amp; a nice guy. Others not so good. Check ocean conditions. If conditions look poor, cancel %26amp; pick another day. Lahina can get very crowded, especially weekends. Many surf schools use this area. On poor days, everyone gets packed into a small area where the waves break- result is fewer rides %26amp; students crashing into one-another. You%26#39;ll end up paying a lot of money for floating around waiting for a wave. Remember, no refunds. Goofy foot requires cash only (no credit cards) ! Great pro photographer works with Goofy Foot.

Another vote for Goofy Foot. Our kids 17, and 14 loved it. We also took the advice of others and ate lunch at Pacific-O%26#39;s. The kids did the 11am school. We watched close up for the first hour and by distance for the last hour while eating lunch. When the kids were done they walked right past us back to the school. Photographer got some amazing shots, make sure you add this. You leave right away with a CD . I think it was only $15 extra. Well worth it.

Volcano back to Kohala at night- scary drive?

We%26#39;re staying at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in about 2 weeks, and plan to spend a day at the Volcano. I know we should stay over in Hilo or something, but we%26#39;ll only be on the BI for a few days at the end of our honeymoon and don%26#39;t have the time to stay on both sides of the island. We%26#39;re used to driving long distances, so it isn%26#39;t a problem, I%26#39;m just worried that if we wait to come back to the hotel until after dark, the road might dangerous. I would imagine it isn%26#39;t well lit in many parts. Should we purposely leave the Volcano while we still have daylight? And how far of a drive is it? I%26#39;m estimating 2-3 hours one way. Thanks!

Volcano back to Kohala at night- scary drive?

we deliberately left VNP a bit early to be sure we got back to Kona in daylight, but I no longer care to drive at night.

we went southern route but assume you will go through Hilo. I don%26#39;t think there are lights anywhere along route except in Hilo. and Waimea.

You could hope for a cloudless night and moon.

Volcano back to Kohala at night- scary drive?

At night you%26#39;re looking at about a 3 hour or longer drive. If you come back via the North it%26#39;s a bit faster and likely safer (better road conditions). The south is VERY dark and after driving it twice I wouldn%26#39;t want to do it again unless I had to. We drove from Hilo to Kohala one morning around 4am (we had a tour at 6am and were in Hilo that night; long story, big schedule mistake) and it was a MUCH easier drive.

But I%26#39;d give myself 3+ hours from the Volcano to Kohala, especially if you start from the end of CoC.

The view at night IS worth the stay in the park though. We did it three times and it was well worth it. But we also were in Hilo one of those really late nights.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no volcanoes in Minnesota, so you HAVE to go to VNP, and you HAVE to be at the end of CoC road after dark.

As long as you are patient, awake, and take the northern route through Hilo, it%26#39;s really not that bad. There are no deer, moose or bears on the road, so I%26#39;d actually prefer driving in the dark than at twilight.

Yes it is Very dark.and no street lights at all... From the end of chain of craters roadis 1 hour after dark ( 35mph) and another 1 hour to Hilo, 1.5 hours Hilo to Waimea and another 30 min to the Mauna Kea. Figure 4 hours

The southern route is not a good choice after dark... no services and very winding road for the 100 mile drive

ok no snow except on mtntops but road is getting better going across saddle and rental agencies are allowing. Rain and mud slides can slow traffic on north route but roads are wide enough just wind in and out of hillsides with guardrails. Yes being from Mn we are use to long rides at night and yes no deer but donkies and goats to watch for. 190 may save time but what I%26#39;ve noticed is there are more speeders at night. Route south of Kona have driven lots at night but it is narrower and not as many guard rails You definitely want to be wide awake coming back you are on inside but alot more residencial areas you are going through as well. We have not left hilo until after 10 at night many times just follow crowd but be sure to fill up in hilo cause cheaper and there are not many stations along way between big cities open at night. This year have noticed alot more police and they drive everything imaginable so keep eye out for blue light on top.

Aah the views too rainy in February?

We%26#39;re splitting 7 or 8 days on BI: 2 or 3 nites Hale Hualalai B%26amp;B in Kona area, 2 nights Country Goose for VNP. We%26#39;d love a B%26amp;B up the coast above Hupan Beach or somewhere like that. We want to do lots of sightseeing, not much time on beaches, but now I%26#39;m worried it might be cold, rainy if we stay up in Waimea? The Aah the View B%26amp;B sounds wonderful, but it might not be the best place to be based to see the whole Kahala area and Hamakua coast. Any recommendations?

Aah the views too rainy in February?

Aah the Views is on the dry side of Waimea. There%26#39;s almost a line you walk across in Waimea where the rain starts and ends. The dry side is Kohala desert. The wet side is lush green pastures and trees. It probably rains more in the other two places you mentioned.

The town of Waimea can get cold for Hawaii, although Volcano is colder. The coastline downhill in Puako can be hot and muggy even in winter, so the cooler climate of Waimea can be a boon and it%26#39;s super popular as a place to live here. Depends what you%26#39;re looking for really, whether you want heat.

You might write the owner and ask her for her candid opinion of the weather that time of year as she%26#39;s been there long enough to know.

Aah the views too rainy in February?

winter is the dry time on the west coast......... Remember last feb and march whrn all the other islands were getting huge rains? well here in Kona we got 1 inch for the month and in Kohala they got .5 for the month

Thereis a wet and dry side to Waimea and it gets both windy and cold. it resembles the northern california coast in weather... with low clouds and drizzel.. It is where the trade winds collide with high mountains and funnel their force through the natural pass that is Waimea

Waimea is a residential village with no visitor services and 15 miled to the beach Hawi, furthur north, is very windy and rainy as well as the Hamakua coast which has no beaches to speak of.

As others have noted you should be okay on the dry side of Waimea. Aah the Views is a great base to see North Kohala and Hawi areas and you could probably make it do for the Hamakua Coast, especially since you%26#39;re going on to Volcano. Some of the Hamakua Coast sites are pretty far from Waimea (such as Hilo, the Hawaii National Tropical Botanical Gardens and Akaka Falls) but could easily be done on your way from Waimea to Volcano.

    agreed,

the nice thing about aah the views location is you don%26#39;t have to go through Waimea to take off for the Kohala coast beaches or North Kohala (either route, 250 or 270). As the traffic into and out of Waimea has become so bad lately, this is a plus. The drive up from Kawaihae can be slow if you get behind a truck pulling the grade, but at least you%26#39;re at the ';views'; before you hit the crawl leading up to the big intersection in Waimea.

Also it is a prime location for sunsets. Not sure about the view from the property itself but the sunsets are gorgeous in that vicinity.

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens deserves a minimum of 2 hours, a half day is more like it. The admission is up to $17 a person now but it%26#39;s worth it if you take the time to enjoy it, not really something you can appreciate by taking a whirlwind tour on the way to VNP. The gardens are easier to catch if you%26#39;re staying in Hilo as you can seize the moment when you get the sunshine.

I have to remind myself that visitors find the drive from Honokaa to Hilo a scenic experience. While I appreciate the scenery, it is a tiring drive to me, mostly because people drive like idiots trying to pass gasoline tankers on 2-lane roads and doing stupid stuff going around the big gulches, which I don%26#39;t find makes for a relaxing drive. It is indeed a beautiful drive if you luck out and hit a window where there%26#39;s little traffic, no road work, and it%26#39;s not raining.

    Even as a visitor I would think one round trip on Hwy 19 is enough during a trip, two at most. I think it would be better to relocate lodgings to cover East Hawaii than to ';commute.';

IM in july we hit rainy days and then sunny days and days of both. North of kona is suppose to be 3in of rain /year well they got all that when we were there but guess what we saw all as usual. Weather changes faster there than where we are.
