Hi everyone:
I am new here and my husband and I are planning our first trip to Hawaii next August for our 5th wedding anniversary. I am so excited and just starting to do some research. I really don%26#39;t know much about the islands and the differences in them or even where to begin. After reading the other postings, I figured this was the way to start...with a request for your best suggestions.
You suggestions are greatly appreciated!
10 Day Anniversary Trip August 2007 - Where to start?
Lucky girl! I didn%26#39;t get to go until the 15th anniversary! We visited 3 islands--6 days on Maui, 4 on Big Island, and 6 on Kauai. If I had to do it all again, I%26#39;d stick to 2 islands. And with 10 days I would do just two (3 is alot!). Which two really depends on you, and what you want to see and do. Maui has more of a populated feel, but not a ';big city'; feel. Lots of nice beaches and hotels though! The Big Island is definitely different, and you know it right when you fly up, since the airport is in the middle of a lava field! It has it%26#39;s share of great hotels too, and has the added benefit of an active volcano.
Everybody has their favorite island. I love the Big Island, but Wailea Beach on Maui is my favorite beach. Alot of people here love Kauai, and I have to say that the Princeville/Hanalei area has the most unbelievable view you will ever lay eyes on. And we still need to visit Lana%26#39;i!
The ';revealed books'; helped us out alot, and there%26#39;s one for Maui, Big Island, Kauia and I think for Oahu. Have fun planning!

Aloha and welcome to the forum! I would say alot of it depends on what activities you would like to do and the setting you are picturing yourself in - that will help you determine the best islands for you as well. Each island is unique and offers difference experiences . . . and suits different personalities as well. Reading others trips reports will be helpful to you as well as the books recommended by the previous poster. I also agree that it should be one to two islands max - you will want to relax and enjoy Hawaii, not rush around . . . absorb that aloha spirit! You will love it. Let us know more about what you are planning to do, so we can better direct you. PS - my favorite island is Kauai . . . :)
Thank you so much for you suggestions. I will definately take a look at all of them. As for what we are looking to do and interested in... I think that we would like to do some touristy things and then spend some time just relaxing on the beach in Hawaii. I am really a great fan of waterfalls so I would love to see some of those. I would also like to do the horseback riding trip and see the volcanos. We also really enjoy great food and just laying back and relaxing. So, I would say that part of the trip can be agenda driven with activites and things to see and the other half we wan to find a nice resort in a great area and just soke up Hawaii.
Again, thanks for the suggestions so far.
hello again - for waterfalls, you best bet is Kauai, then Maui perhaps . . . for active volcanos, the Big Island and for an extinct volcano, Maui. :)
