Horseback Riding in Maui

Im an experienced rider interested in taking a horseback tour in Maui this October. I%26#39;ve been looking at Lahaina Stables.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am looking for a place where the horses are well taken care of and the staff is friendly but not too cheesy. :)

Help! Thanks!

I%26#39;d recommend Makena Stables... you%26#39;ll ride across the back side of Haleakala, looking down upon La Perouse Bay, and if you tell them you are experienced, they will let you ride more freely (not on a trail or tail-to-tail, but cantering/galloping all over the place). My sister did this years ago and still raves about it.

Horseback Riding in Maui

We went to Ironwood Ranch in Napili early in July and had a very nice time. We rode though a canyon between some pineapple fields where there was some old ruins and the leader told us alot about local history and life. There was some awesome views. The gal that runs the place has a great sence of humor but is a very serious person. The horses were very well kept. They name there horses after actors so that may be considered cheesy. The staff was very nice and professional.

If you go there say Hi to Owen Wilson for me. Owen is one of their Maui born horses so he lives life on Maui time. Owen has one speed, Owen%26#39;s speed. lol

In all of my web searching I had never heard of Lahaina Stables but I looked at their website and it looks like it might be a nice ride but they don%26#39;t have alot of pics on their site. Their a little more expensive than Ironwood. Ironwoodranch.com has a bunch of pics of their place, trails and horses. I don%26#39;t know anything about the east Maui stables.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I%26#39;ve gone on several rides on Maui (not Lahiana; it sounds really good). The Ironwood I found a little tame (but that was partially due to a couple in our group that had no riding experience). I really enjoyed the Mendez (or is it Mendes) Ranch ride; the guides are real cowboys, you get to run up a hill. the views are amazing. I got to ride a roping horse; very responsive. I also really liked Adventures on Horseback; great horses, and you do get a chance to lope up a grassy hill if you are experienced. Very picturesque also.

HI SJ,

I%26#39;m actually leaving for Maui on Saturday, we have the lunch ride booked with Lahaina Stables. I will post about it when I get back on the 18th. When do you guys leave?

ps. I%26#39;m also an experienced rider - I rode both English and Western for 12 years.

MAKENA STABLES is wonderful. Pat is a very experienced guide, and the views are amazing. I%26#39;m COMPLETELY TERRIFIED of horses, but my husband surprised me with a ride on our honeymoon and we both had fun.

We are planning to ride at Ironwood. DH has never ridden before, and Ironwood is closer to our condo. I had originally wanted the Mendes Ranch, so that I could ';ride'; more, but the downside is that it%26#39;s on the OTHER side of West Maui, so we opted for Ironwood. They also have the same dogs at the ranch that we have, sorta. Kona~our dog looks exactly like their Australian Shepherds. :)

If you want to go off the beaten path, I highly recommend Maui Stables in Kipahulu near Hana. The horses are kept in pastures all day long and each horse is bathed daily! The ride is the most breathtaking thing I have ever seen. (I won%26#39;t give away the surprise at the end.)

The ranch hands are so nice and they educate you about traditional Hawaiian chants and history durng the ride. We were staying in Hana, but the rest of our group drove in from the ';backside'; of Haleakala in the morning.

Tell the unforgettable Keoni that Annette and Pedram say ';Aloha!';

wow this has all been so helpful.... i can%26#39;t decide!

questions though, is there a way i can respond to each relpy i got? or do i just put my replies in like this.....

(im new!)

You can just put your replies in the big white box. :)

If you want, you can address an individual by putting the person%26#39;s screen name at the beggining of your sentences, but use one box to respond. (Example: sjsarge, great questions!)
