First time visitor....advice required

I am coming to Hawaii from Australia for the very first time in early November for only 5 nights, but not sure whether to island hop (possibly Maui) or just stay on Oahu. I prefer to avoid really cheesy main tourist destinations (although I believe Pearl Harbour is worth a visit), so I have been told I may not enjoy Waikiki. Or is Waikiki a really good entree to a Hawaiin visit? Any suggestions??

IMHO, people go to Waikiki just because it%26#39;s Waikiki. Honolulu is a big city with a beach out front. Pearl Harbor is definitely worth a visit, though.

I%26#39;m assuming you%26#39;re flying into HNL. You might think about staying a night in Waikiki just to see it, do Pearl Harbor from there, then move to someplace less built-up on the north or east shore.
