Planning on seeing the sunrise atop Haleakala, what time in the morning should I leave from Kaanapali to get up there, and can you suggest any lookout places from main parking lot (if there is one)
Many thanks all!
Kaanapali to Haleakala... How long?

I dont know if there is a lookout place atop this mountain, but I did do a search on my mapping program and the distance is 59.8 miles and would take 1 hour %26amp; 39 minutes to get there from Ka%26#39;anapali.Sunrise is about 7:21 am. I hope this helps! It sounds like it will a beautiful sight to see!

You can%26#39;t miss the lookout once you get to the top. It is an awesome sight. Worth the drive and the early wake up.
From what I have read in different posts in regards to travel times to Haleakala ...from near the Kahului Airport region its 2.5 to 3 hrs drive and that is atleast 30 mins from Kaanapali.
So its safe to say ..and again from what I read ...if you leave at 3am from Kaanapali and limit your stop offs on the way to the top of Haleakala ...you can make it in about 3 hrs if you leave at 3am and have 20 -30 mins to spare before the sunrise!
Thats my game plan atleast!
Getting there in time for sunrise is only part of the battle. Getting there in time to find a place to park is the real challenge. Parking is limited at the very top. If you are unable to find a parking spot at the top, your only other choice is to park at the lower parking area and call it good enough or hoof it up to the top lookout in the darkness of night.

Mauichik,
((Sunrise is about 7:21 am.))
Um, was that a typo? When I checked to see what time the sunrise will be when we go next month, it was something like 6:10am. We%26#39;re planning on leaving the Sheraton no later than 3:15am in order to not to miss it.

Here is the Sunrise/Sunset Chart for the month of October 2006 for Hana ...which can%26#39;t be to much different from Haleakala. It is between 6:14 am on the 1st and 6:25 on the 31st.

I stayed in Kaanapali three weeks ago with my wife and two daughters (15 and 11). We paid for a van/tour company to take us because I wanted to enjoy the trip without the stress of driving up in the dark and I also didn%26#39;t want to worry about finding a good place to park. We were picked up at our rental condo at 2:15am, made one very brief stop to pick up a few other people and sip some coffee, and got to the top about 5:15. We were there in plenty of time to secure a nice vantage point and my youngest daughter napped in the van until ';show time'; was near. I must say that this was truly an amazing experience. The clouds were like a surreal floor to look down upon. When the light started to crack through and the sunrise began unfolding it was everything I hoped this experience would be.

Thanks! I knew it wasn%26#39;t as late after 7am.

No Problem...was glad I could help!
It took us 3 hours to drive there. We left 1/2 hour earlier to make sure we got a parking spot.
The roads are not lit but the stars are so beautiful and the lights from the city are glowing.
We got a great spot near the ranger post and we took lots of photos. Be sure to dress warm and we brought our hotel blanket to wrap up in while we waited for the sun to come up! We stopped at the first look out next to the crator.
