How do you get to Hapuna Beach...

from the Hilton Waikoloa? I am hoping for specifics such as where to park, the path to take, etc. Is it true that this is a good beach for boogie boarding and/or body surfing? Thanks!

How do you get to Hapuna Beach...

Sealbeachgirl713,

Turn left. Drive north until you see the sign that says Hapuna State Park.

The parking lot is kinda divided, it doesn’t really matter where you park, I try to park in the makai lot, closer to the monkey pod and keawe trees in my ever vain attempt to find shade for my car. Follow the paved paths down to the beach. Go early and on a week day if possible, since on weekends Hilo folk come out there and it gets busy.

Good boogie boarding, but usually the waves aren’t too big. There is a rip current there, so be careful. Wear fins if boogie boarding. During the summer the break moves really close to shore. During the winter I have seen 6’ waves at Hapuna, but that is rare. There are partially submerged rocks in the middle of the beach, stay north of the rocks. Look for other spongers and read the break. Usually the break is from the middle, meaning the center of the beach is where the wave first begins to break, and the break moves from right to left on the south side and left to right on the north. But it is Hapuna, so some days, all will be left to right, and once in a while right to left. All depends on where the waves are coming from, time of year, was there just a storm etc. It is fun, but make sure you wear long sleeves or lots of waterproof sunscreen (and reapply) or you will get burned. I body surf every time, even when I have my sponge and I usually get pounded at least once. But it is mostly sandy bottom so not too bad. More fun with a board!

BTW - I was down in the SD area last month and LOVED it. Beautiful.

Good luck and happy travels!

My wife more boogey board person tahn me, But Hapuna Beach is her favorite place to boogey boards. whne we have gone has not been crowded and I can find some shade on south end. Great beach.

Just get out on Hwy 19 and go north well signed and fairly good parking, unless busy day

walk 4 miles from the hapuna prince hotel, according to some.

This is my favorite beach on the Big Island. There is only 1 public parking lot, which was described by other posts. I%26#39;ve never been there when there was enough wave action for anything more than light body surfing, so relative to other islands, set your expectations low. Where this beach excels is its pure beauty as a wide expanse of white sand, blue waters, and mostly gentle waves (especially in the morning). By the way, there%26#39;s decent snorkeling a little bit beyond the north end of the beach (Hapuna Prince Hotel end). I hope that you enjoy it as much as I.
