I am packing to leave tomorrow for Maui.
Should I pack dress slacks for my husband or do the men wear Dockers etc.even in the better restaurants? He doesn%26#39;t want to feel out of place.
Clothing question
its maui!! dress shorts!!
Clothing question
It%26#39;s really up to each individual. I prefer Dockers in some of the nicer restaurants in the evening--I find that there are more slacks than shorts in these restaurants most of the time. Definitely shorts though in places like Hula Grill, Cheeseburger in Paradise, etc.
So men don%26#39;t wear dress slacks even in the ';fancier'; restaurants such as at the Four Seasons? You can wear Dockers anywhere you might go at night?
Definitely pack at least one pair of long pants. I also recommend one or more long sleave button down ';oxford type'; shirts that can be worn either with long pants or nice shorts.
Ferraro%26#39;s, Nick%26#39;s Fishmarket, and a few others are worthy of long pants.
Plus, at night sitting outside there is a comfort level as the temps drop.
At least a few nights on each vacation, my wife and I dressed nicely for a meal. It is great to sit in the lobby of Four Seasons dressed in long pants, a relatively shirt and a sport coat, with my wife also dressed nicely, while we listen to live Hawaiian music, and then to stroll down the grand staircase to Ferraros. The clothes help make it more of an event.
Also, we tended to eat late, especially at Ferraros. Long pants are more comfortable and it was also nice at that time to give my wife my sport coat if there was a bit of a chill in the air (65 or so).
The final pieces of advice: Don%26#39;t miss dinner at Joe%26#39;s at the Wailea Tennis Club (casual clothes, incredible food and service) and make sure to drive south one day to La Perousse Bay and Big Beach.
Make sure to file a trip report. Hope you like this place as much as my wife and I do.
I think shorts are fine for almost all restaurants. but taking a long pair of pants is a good idea. The only place I%26#39;ve ever worn long pants on Maui was at Haleakala%26#39;s summit. At least you%26#39;d have a pair regardless.
I re-read your last post.
You distinguished between ';Dockers'; and dress pants.
The long pants that I wear relatively routinely in Maui for dinner are either Polo or something similar khaki color pants. Definitely not ';dress pants'; per se.
I haven%26#39;t owned Dockers in a while, but I assume they are similar to the Polo version of khakis. That definitely works at all the restaurants and they are pretty comfortable also.

This is turning into a series of posts.
For Haleakala, you want sweat pants. It is cold up there until sun rise, and then it warms up. The best option is sweat pants over shorts so that you can remove the sweat pants when it gets warmer and still be comfortable.
He doesn%26#39;t need dress pants. Dockers / khakis are fine for any restaurant. ';Dressed up'; means tucking your aloha shirt in to your dockers and wearing real shoes and a belt. And you only wear a suit to court or your OWN wedding or funeral.
Glad that you reread my post. I was just ready to put the wool pants in. Now I am taking white and Khaki pants for him. We live in San Francisco and it is so hard to think of anywhere being warm at night.
We have reservations at FS for the first 5 days. I am sure that I can extend it. I thought that we might want to stay in a different part of Maui for 4 nights We do that a lot. It is like going on 2 vacations.
My husband%26#39;s planning on bringing his tan slacks that he wears to work with an aloha shirt for a couple of the dinners out. He was going to bring his shoes, but I told him his sandals (not the flip-flop kind) would be okay. Am I wrong in this or should he bring his shoes too? I%26#39;m trying to cut down on what to pack and lugging another pair of shoes seems crazy. Between the sneakers he%26#39;s wearing there, the sandals, the hiking shoes and the reef shoes, that%26#39;s already 3 more pairs of shoes than he normally brings on vacation.
