2 weeks till vacation! We would like to pick up some groceries on the way from the airport to the North shore (staying near Tunnels). What reasonably priced store would you recommend and how would we get there?

Personally I like using my Makai card as well (both at Foodland and/or Sack %26#39;N Save)

can%26#39;t miss either unless you take the Kapaa bypass.

Forget the frozen stuff though. as you are an hour from Tunnels. The grocery in Princeville shopping center would be better for those.

and there are no reasonably priced stores here. We%26#39;re hoping Costco will take down prices a notch or 2. Paid $3 for a loaf of bread not long ago. aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggg

dave820...bread in California is almost $4.00. I am finding prices in Kauai quite comparable to those in Northern California with the exception of produce. I go to the local Kauai Farmers%26#39; Markets for produce.

olesya...I carry a softsided Arctic Zone thermal bag in the car for all the rounds I make on the island during a stay. I smash it down in my luggage until I get there and then fill it up with ice at Foodland or Safeway until I can get to a refrig/freezer.

Agree, stop at the Foodland or Safeway in Kapaa and use their discount cards (go to customer service or sometimes the check stand to ask).

bjbert is wise. ;-) If you don%26#39;t have a soft cooler bag, stop at Walmart and look in their camping or beach stuff department. You can pick up a nice, roomy Hawaiian print one for about $15. Take it home with you as a souvenir. Like bj, we pack ours.

With ice cream being almost $7.00/half gallon, we were worried!!!

After wrongly choosing ';BIG SAVE'; to buy groceries...we found out walmart and kmart are MUCH cheapier!

Fuel was around $3.86 for unleaded/gallon.

Soft sided cooler is a must for us, lunch on plane (if they don%26#39;t take it away), cold groceries to condo, daily lunch when moving about. beer on the beach for sunset.

I can%26#39;t really remember Walmart there K-Mart had limited groceries for us as I reacall and wrong direction to Princeville

we usually get a few staples like hamburger, milk, eggs veggies, etc.

My wife feels need to check out both Foodland and Safeway before we spend big bucks.

Makai card is nice but so is Safeway card. we have that already do you??
