I am wondering if some one familiar with Maui for a long time ( late 60%26#39;s - early 70%26#39;s ) might be able to help me find a location.
My recently deceased dear SIL lived on Maui for a time in a commune in the late 60%26#39;s - early 70%26#39;s on Makena Beach. It was a very special place to her. I would like to visit the area while I am in Maui, kind of as a memorial for her. The trouble is that she only ever refered to it as Makena Beach.
I wonder if someone that is familiar with that area at the time might know which beach she may have lived on. I have been checking out the current area and my guess is that it may likely have been the Little Beach area. I guess this only because it seems more private and because it is from my understanding somewhat of a nude beach now - it may have been a place a commune would have been. Was there a beach just called Makena Beach?
Any long timers have any idea? I know just being on Maui will be a bit of a rememerance of her, but would like to find the place as close as possible.
Thank you
Makena Big Beach / Little Beach Question for Locals
I was there on a vacation in the late 70%26#39;s. The nude beach was called ';Makena Beach.'; I did not hear it called ';Little Beach'; until recently.
There was a dirt road leading to Big Beach. Then, you walked over the point to the nude beach.
I did not see what looked like people living there, but I would not be surprised to find out some did.

Makena Big Beach / Little Beach Question for Locals
More than likely she lived on Big Beach, also known as Makena Beach, but correctly called Oneloa. Choke hippies lived there in the late sixties. Sometime around 71-72 they were all chased off after several outbreaks of commicable nasties. From there many of them moved to the other side, Ha`iku, Huelo, into the jungle, places like Banana Patch. Some of them are still out there.
Thanks for the info about Makena Beach. At first I was leaning toward Little Beach, but now after reading Kaiwahine%26#39;s info about people living on Big Beach in 71-72 , then being chased off- seems about right. My beloved SIL was there at about that time . She was only there for a few months, actually visiting her hippie brother that lived in a commune there for quite sometime. Right before she left, I remember she said they were being chased off the beach then. So I am now thinking it was Big Beach. She loved how beautiful it was there and it always was a special place in her heart. Just wanted to be sure to visit that spot and remember her while visiting there. Thank you.
